Tack Driver 6

I’m really trying to forget TD5, but god it was so much fun.
It’s the kind of fun like when a tattoo is over and your sad it’s over, kind of fun.
I brought down two good shooters for their first time, and both were throughly humbled.
So what am I bringing next year, I don’t know.
So how do you prepare, I don’t know.
So how do I get better at TD, I really don’t know.
What I do know is I’ll have another headache thanks to Roy at TD6.
That’s really all I know.
I CAN tell you what not to do...............setting in 12th place in group after 4 targets then DON'T shoot a 4.2" group! Fell to 84th. I still have an inquiry out to NASA about using the Hubble telescope OR some type of laser they can go through mirage............

I am going to chamber up a .284 on an 8.7 twist barrel and see if i can make 268 or 180 grain bullet work. I know the 180 hybrids shoot well. I am also working on a 30 cal. Something bigger than the 30br to try to get it to work at the 300 meter distance.
Cant do much for the older eyeballs other than maybe purloin Bart’s big scope.

I’m seriously prepping for 100 to 300 locals. My reservation is that the 222 Magnum isn’t quite there. The stock and overall weight are perfect but it was never considered ideal.

Last night, I saw what I do consider ideal. 222 REM but not magnum. 40-X’s. Virtual twins except the bases. Two of them. Cabelas La Vista.

Both are headed South now.

Whoever keeps taking minty 40-X’s to that store’s gun library, - nothing against them, but —Here I am.

Anybody see any potential?
L to R
30BR
30GT
30x47L
308 Win.

30BR doesnt seem to fare View attachment 1605336well at the Tackdriver. Perhaps something with a little more capacity.
Wasn’t a close variant of the 30x47 the king of the hunter class when it had a minimum case capacity restriction? I wonder if something shooting the 185gn Juggernaut might not do well. That bullet always seems to shoot really well in just about anything.

Neck down that 30 GT to 7mm and get some 100 grain Sierra Varmints.
A 16 twist Max heavy varmint barrel, and cram it with Varget.

I spent the afternoon out in the shop, machining one more full length
push die with mandrel before taking it to the final full length sizer. I
should be getting some good results in a day or two. I also selected
one of my no turn 284 Winchester reamers and did a shallow cut on a
barrel stub for a casting. I need that neck dimension to see what that
FL die might need......Either way, it will be another of my cats based on the
284 Winchester case.....And note......This Peterson brass has been some of
the best I have manipulated. Using a follower mandrel, It draws like butter.

Speaking of butter !!......Here a bowl of popcorn for Yinz......

As I recall, the original 30x47 was a 308 Winchester run in 4mm short. There were variations. I chambered a 30PPC for a guy in the mid-80's. He shot an agg in the low twos with it. As I recall, he was shooting 150's. Barrel was a 14 twist Shilen.
I think a 30 BR shooting 150s, should be usable. One could even get 168's doing 2200 plus. To use 168's, one would want to chamber the Lovelace variant. The one with the deep throat.
I like the idea of a thirty. WH

Honed the final push die and put the Imperial to it. Success !!
And came real close to the 35 degree shoulder I was after. It
should look real good after running through the FL die, and
no excessive brass movement during fire forming......Now here
is a bonus. If I stopped right now, I'd have a 30 !! All stop
numbers and mandrel sizes are logged in the book if that day
ever comes. At this point, I'm ahead of schedule.

I simply have to improve my shooting. The only piece of equipment I might change is invest in what ever the latest $4000+ scope is out at the moment that claims to have good enough glass and internals to see something on a bright sunny day at Orangeburg.

That animal might not even exist.

It seems like being able to see was the biggest issue. I kind of wonder if what I like to call "visual maturity" might not be that beneficial. When I got those artificial lenses put in, ten years ago, they seemed like a heck of an improvement. Maybe they just aren't that great! Seeing those bullet holes at 300m, through the mirage, has to be a major challenge. All I have right now, is a selection of 36x BR scopes. Don't know if they'll do the job or not. Our range here, at about 2900 feet and arid, has some mirage, on a hot day, but not nearly so much as closer to sea level and more humidity. WH
