Tack Driver 5

I promise I won’t bring a Bat action PPC shooting 68’s with VV130. What was the caliber and weight limit again?

I'd hate to see everyone attending this match end up shooting the same cartridge. The diversity of equipment at this match seems to be waning as time goes by.
It's easy to see that the 6ppc has been dominant this far, but without diversity to me it becomes just another benchrest match.
I have shot a 22ppc both times I have attended and will when I come back. Maybe it's to my detriment, but I love doing things differently.
It looked like fewer 30br’s this time too.

I had a 243AI that was a shooter for about 700 rounds!! You might be thinking of my 6BRDX I have that still shoots great. It looks like no one uses a straight 6br?? The 6br I built for 300 yd clays is a shooter too but seems like everyone at TD wants a little more horse power??
The .337 was shot with a straight 6BR. I'm very familiar with the devil that shot it.

I also like to see the different cartridges shooting head to head. Many different comps start out that way. Remember when MMA was that way many years ago? Then it always morphs into what gives the competitor the best chance to win.
If the stars all align for me next year and I can attend this match, I will be using a wonderfully balanced 17lb. 6ppc I have here.
I think you would get more diversity in cartridges if there was another " Tack Driver " type match set-up at 400 or 500yds......Ideally here in the western Pa. eastern Ohio area.....LOL
Hope to be able to make the trip next year...............

Regards
Rick

Rick......Jeremiah Keefe set up the first Mini TD at Anderson Creek, and we
shot it at 400. There were grumblings about not seeing sighters and rules
state that you can not have a separate spotting scope at the bench. It was
decided to shoot the following years Mini TD at 300, which you attended.
It was fun.....eh !!......I looked back at the early intent and postings from the
very first TD and was basically to bring together all disciplines to compete.
Well that ain't happening.....LOL !! My biggest disappointment was bowing
out of competition with one of my heavy wild cats on a 22 lb gun. I had a
new barrel done 2 weeks prior to the drive down, and was struggling with
it. Knowing on Friday, I'd have time to do more testing with the tuner, well
it got worse. Bowing out was the right thing to do. I'll get it figured out and
be back. As for what is currently ruling the roost, the one main detrimental
factor is still the range itself and it's conditions. I can actually say that what
I witnessed there was not much different then Anderson Creek here in Pa.
Why beer is brewed, and colorful words invented......

Yes, straight 6BR in the same configuration I have used for the last 10 years or so. And it was shooting head to head against a field of ppc’s, the shooter was not.

Caliber discussions are necessary for sure, but we tend not to analyze the “caliber of the shooters” placing that high over and over in those type of matches.

The ppc and 30BR well driven over a field of flags are still dangerous at 300m, as TD results have proven.
But it is also important to recognize that the best shooters in the world tend to be behind those calibers.

The point I am trying to make is that 300m at Orangeburg stretches a bit the comfort zone for the ppcs/30brs, but they still perform on top because there are quite a bit of them registered, and many of them are shot by great-great shooters.

If you feel you can handle the heat, then go to Orangeburg with a ppc/30BR.

For the rest of us human, I recommend to still lean on the slow twist side of things for accuracy considerations, but give yourself some help by either shooting 80 grain or a 90 grain in 6mm.
Heavier than that I feel it is not necessary and it might slightly hurt your chances in score.

If you decide to follow my recommendations, you can thank me later.

That’s a great response to what this prestigious match really is.
Can we see that target again, and any play by play on what you had to do to shoot it. That was really outstanding at 300.

I will give you my play by play.

Ready on the left
Ready on the right
Ready on the firing line
Commense fire

Zombie Killer places first round into chamber. He thinks he hits the sighter target. Cant be sure. .. It goes downhill from there.

That’s funny Wes
Let me type up mine next.

That target was shot on the second day of the match, at the start of the day.
That morning the time had changed from Day Light Saving to Standard time (fallback 1 hour), but luckily I was in the first relay and the wind was still nonexistent by 8am. Only the first few flags had started to move and wake up.

Optically, best conditions ever, crystal clear. But there again, the slightest shimmering of mirage had just appeared, and it was coming in and out.
The sun light at a flat angle from the left was striking the trees on the right side of the field. The ground still shadowed but not for long.

In preparation for a possible condition like that, I convinced myself that I had to adjust for the slow mirage.
Also convinced myself that a slow mirage would drive my POI to a lower position, so to counter it I had to force myself to adjust ever so slightly up. And that's what I did for right or wrong.
Shot at a steady pace to make sure the gun handling was correct, but efficiently fast enough to get them all out relatively quick. Maybe 30-35 seconds they were all out.

Sighters:
Aimed first sighter on the first line at the bottom of target.
Then walked them up from there.
I noticed they were high and left and thought about clickling the scope to center it. But talked myself out of it...'do not mess with it' I said to myself and went for record.

For record:
Firt short, aimed center.
From there and on, if there was a slight shimmering I did not stop, instead I would aim about a bullet hole high and sent it.
If the image was clear and steady, the POA was dead center.
That last shot took a little bit of prayer. I couldn't tell if it opened the group or went through the middle.

If you notice the group, there is a bit more than a bullet hole of vertical.
Did I induce some of it or took some of it out? I will have that question in my head for a long long time.

Here is the target.

@P1ZombieKiller

Wes you forgot to add,
next five shots for record " where'd they go " !
At least in my case.

I'm hoping to attend next year and "probably" will be shooting a straight 6BR, I could probably shoot a laser pointer and still lose :(
