Stock trouble

Has anyone else delt with CPA for replacement stocks ? This is the first stock I have tried to do my self so when it first arrived I didn’t think much about it but now it isn’t going to work I called CPA they said to send it back and they would pound a doll rod and re-drill the hole was told it would be worked on right away well now it’s going to be at least a week and if that doesn’t work they will make a new one my question is why would you even send this out ? Should I just say hey make a new one.

I don't believe that I would want one that had a dowel rod glued in and re-drilled. The dowel rod would probably be a different type of wood and would react differently with heat and humidity.
I would hold out for a brand new done correctly or not at all.

I have stripped and finished a few stocks but not to this extent so I did some work on the stock before I realized that it wasn’t going to work. So their stance is its my fault for working on a stock that never should have been shipped out being that far off center. They will not replace it unless gluing the wood doll rod wont work. On top of that it cost me another $20 for return shipping and insurance to have it repaired

Don’t accept the dowel rod solution. That’s a problem waiting to happen.

According to the maker that’s not an option I would be happy to just get my money back. I will never make the mistake of going back but it ain’t over yet

I will agree that that should never have been sent out like that. But, many of the stocks I have worked on over the years have very poorly done action screw holes. On bolt guns, I just drill it out and add aluminum pillars when I bed the action. No reason why you couldn't do the same with that stock. Plug it with a wooden dowel, redrill where it needs to be, finish the inletting, drill out the dowel and replace with an aluminum pillar when you bed it.

The stock goes on a martini international MKII it has a straight rod that the stock goes over then there’s a nut that looks more like a threaded bushing that screws on the end of the rod. Here’s a couple pics I took with my bore scope.

The dowel, if it fits in the hole and they use the correct glue, will work just fine and possibly even be stronger. It does suck though that they sent you something that's wrong and won't stand by it.
That stock doesn't have cast off built into does it?

What is cast off ? When they dowel and re-drill most of the dowel will be gone also the the hole is two different sizes the rear of the stock is about 1”” the front looks to be around 1/2 in so it makes a shoulder then there’s a washer that drops down the back hole and stops at the shoulder so when it’s tightened it sucks the stock up to the receiver

Cast of is when the stock doesn't come out straight from in line with the bore. On a rigjt hand stock if look from above, the stock comes to the right a bit and left for a lefty. Gives a little room to get your face behind the sights.
Looking at the stock on the action makes it look like there is some cast off. Do the the inlet, glue in a dowel and find where your hole should be. It may not need to be perfectly lined up with the hole in the butt if the hole near the action is properly placed.
The hole for the stock bolt cannot be that far off. The duplicating stub doesn't matter once inletted.

Both a friend and I have used CPA for stock work before. Neither of us have had a problem with them, and none of the work received has looked anything like what you have. It seems as if you got someone on a bad day, both on the duplicator and on the telephone. Ask to speak with someone else if you don't get satisfaction with whoever answers the phone.

I used CPA because every person I spoke with on forms and at the range said the quality was good I paid extra for semi fancy and the wood it’s self looks great and I was looking forward to seeing how it would look after finish sanding and tru- oil just disappointed with the drilling. I don’t have a problem with the doweling as long as it doesn’t come loose and there is no guarantee of that if it’s mounted looks and shoots great cool but what happens a year down the road and the glue fails ?

I have been dealing with CPA rifles and I hope people don’t think I am just bashing them I am not I just want to hear what others think like I said I am not a gun smith or stock maker but a retired welder I just wanted to know what others thought about the doweling of the stock if I misled anyone I apologize hope all have a happy thanksgiving

I think i would try to do the inlet and see how it fits as is. Think about all the old rifles where the wood has shrunk so much that the hole around the stock bolt is super sloppy but the stock is still tight.
Walt is right you could drill it bigger(do NOT use a twist drill bit, it will tear things apart) and you could wrap the tube our our back with a couple layers of tape and bed around the hole. You'll know it's there but no-one else will. Sorry it's turning into a cluster for you.
