Special Varmint Rigg's Let's See EM! and Tell Us Why? Not Favorites, but SPECIAL!

When you like something and it works very well for you, just about everything's "special". This one has been special to me for at least 25yrs.. A Ruger 77/22M that was only acceptably accurate, nothing special. Got a Lothar Walther 10/22 barrel ( tighter bore, regular stainless), had a 22M reamer done spec'd for Win. silverbox JHP. Very good local 'smith threaded the action and barrelled it. Another local gave it a 12oz trigger, very nice. And it shoots quite well, as well as I could ask of a 22M. It goes on every outing. It now wears a 3-16 Sightron S-Tac

Very very nice.

The Action, the Rose wood forearm cap and heel, and fine line Rose wood accents make this special! This is my custom build 48 years ago, and still being used today!!

It is a Military Strong Springfield 03A3 action, Jewel trigger, 26" Douglas air gauge barrel, FAGEN XXX (fiddle back) walnut Deluxe Custom thumbhole stock with beaver tail forearm, 30 coat tung oil finish!! Topped off with a Leupold 6.5-20x44 Target scope with sun shade!!

It is chamber in 25-06 and has taken deer, antelope, tons of coyotes and a few LOBO from the recession of the mid 70s to early 80s!!! I use one load!! BR2 primed, Remington IMR 4130 powder, topped off with SGK 120 SPBT!!! Coyotes are dead on impact and their lifeless carcasses roll!!!

This one is a true junkyard dog, gunshow special. Sako 461 action from an A&M 17-something pencil barrel, very severe failure. Bent (long) extractor and bulged magazine plate....not difficult to fix and action was otherwise fine. What had been a very pretty stock was cracked and broken here and there. The very skinny barrel was toast. Action fixed, gunshow .222 Apex barrel cut to 23", chambered .221 /.250 nk / 0 fb. Now has a crummy Sako varmint stock, $30 from Gun List. Painted and still ugly. Built in late 80's and still very accurate, has dispatched a huge number of varmints. It now wears a 4-20x50 Athlon Heras scope. Not pretty, but special to me.

Next door is the replacement. Another gunshow special. Sako A1 action w.461 bolt. Had 17 barrel with screwed up chamber, but the nicest Sako stock I've ever seen. Now with Hart barrel, cut to 24", rechambered .221 with my reamer. Came with the brake, I can't get it off. A dream to shoot and extremely accurate. Now has an Arken 6-24 EPL.

Here is on of my “squirrel rifles” it started as a R700 varmint special in 222, that was new to me in the early 90’s. I restocked it with a used Mcmillan HBR stock that has worked great from out custom made pivot benches

I wore it out with AA 2015 and 50 grain TNT’s, rebarreled with a LV contour shilen in 222 and shot another 7500-8000 rounds from that barrel. The barrel was toasty and my batch of brass was also done.

I went with a Bartlein 12 twist in 221 FB on it this time. I still have some 50 grain TNT’s left and they shoot .5 MOA so I will be shooting it with those on the next trip.

I know there are some special varmint riggs and stories out there, where are they all at, I have another candidate being built right now, BUT, it will take some time to get a really special status. It's unique stock gives it some starting point. But it will need some history to become special.

I'm curious and anxious at the same time, let's hear about them and of course, the eye candy is always welcomed by all!

Well for sure their all special when they are yours! Nice rifles.

The most special thing to me about mine are, not just one, but 2 Pence barrels. I would buy nothing but if Ron still made them. But his barrel Table set's idle. The thing so special about Ron's barrels were they are not just cut rifled, they were cut by hand, after deep hole drilling on the same table, that he made, proprietary to his drill rods he made, with cutters proprietary to those rods that again he made.

There is one responding here that I'm pretty sure knows about these because they have a barrel chambered by the hall of famer that helped Ron build that table! Bob Sherer was a renowned barrel maker back in the hay days of Benchrest.

One thing about these barrels, is the love of the art of making them. Not for the money, as they are very time consuming, with not near the profit per barrel the machine made cut rifle barrels are, but then again, over 5 passes for each of the five groves, cranked by hand is more about the love of the art, than the profits of selling them.

Total control of every cut, with an art of feeling each inch as it is being cut, and knowing instantly when anything unwanted shows it by feeling it. With the ability to produce any twist with a change of gears, and no button pushing to sit back and watch it being done for you. machines don't warn you the cutter is getting dull. But feel does before its dull, before it can make imperfections. This was not only an art, but fascinating to watch.

The fhoto on the wall with all the targets is Red (Bob) Scherer, a true artist. It's frustrating knowing this table is just setting idle these day. But both the fine craftsman stepped away while they were still at the top of there game, never to tarnish the reputation they made.

I can build another Savage Axis, another 17 Mach IV, or 6BR, I can just never build another with a barrel this special,,,, I hope you hang on to your's 357mag, it is even more special.
wow

A Jewell trigger on an 03 Springfield!

This Ruger No. 3 is very special to me as it was my first custom varmint rifle. It was a .22 Hornet rechambered to .221 Fireball when I bought it from a friend. After a couple PD shoots in S.D. I had it rebarreled to .219 Wasp with a Shilen Barrel and I put some inexpensive after market wood on it. After close to 6000 rounds I had it rebarreled to my wildcat .204 Wasp with a Pacnor barrel.

Another one special to me is this No. 1 that I bought at a LGS back in 1995. It was my first No.1 and had been rebarreled to .225 WW. I found this Unertl 15X scope at the Indy 1500 gun show about a week later. I loved the way it looked but the scope wasn't the best out on the prairie. No reference points on the fine cross hairs for windage or elevation plus the parallax adjustment was unhandy. I stuck with it till 2009 when I had it rebarreled to my first .204 Wasp with a Kreiger 11" twist. Sold the Unertl and went with a 6.5-20x40 Leopold. First time out shooting 40gr V-Max at 4040 fps had two hits at 634 yds.
