Someone's Gonna Pay.......

So I made a new target, loaded everything up, & we're off the the races.

It was all down hill after that. I shot almost 500 rounds through it today. There was supposed to be light winds, but it was on & off 5-10 & switchy. However, the wind wasn't the culprit for the vast majority of the shooting. Everything was shot at 50 yards.

I tried at least 15 different kinds & lot numbers of ammo. The 2 best 10 shot groups were 1 1/8" & 1 1/4", the rest were patterns. Sometimes I didn't even know where the shot went. I had to skip some of the dots as the shots were spread out all over the place.

After going through everything, I flipped the target & retested all the ammo again. For cleaning, I just sprayed some Hornady One Shot down the hole, & pulled a bore snake through 2-3 times, & went back to shooting. Probably did that 15 times. I thought it was starting to shoot a little better towards the end, so I pounded 70-80 rounds of Federal 36 down the bore to season it some more. Another quick cleaning & I called it a day.

To me it looks like you have put a lot of effort in.
But, ugly groups/patterns.

I bought a Springfield 2020 this spring and the muzzle would accept a 22 bullet about 3/8 in. so I cut the threaded part of and recrowned it. That helped a little. I am going to cut off the chamber end and rethread it and do a match chamber but I don't think it will help much because the bore is ugly. Not pitted but just ugly.

@alf I’m pretty new to rimfire precision, but I think you’re working backwards by cleaning it.

When new, I intended to shoot CCI in mine so I cleared the barrel of any debris with a brush followed by a patch of oil then probably 10 dry patches. I then immediately ran 10 rounds of CCI SV into the dirt.

I’ve tried some other ammos and all I did was shoot 5 off target then 5 for “record.” I haven’t really seen any CCI that shot over an inch. Some under a quarter. I’ve seen some other stuff shoot terrible though.

I cleaned the barrel on my Tikka at 500 rounds because I had it cerakoted. I was amazed that it didn’t need a brush except to pop out a soft carbon ring. I ran a patch of CLP and some dry patches and it was like a black mirror. 100% clean. I was amazed.

Eley club-, Norma match,
Are the ones I’ve seen shoot the best-
SK Longrange, SK match..
5th row down, on the far right, was SK Plus that put 8 into a nice round .710" group, but launched 1 high & 1 to the right.

I'm going to check even barrel float, experiment with action torque, & maybe barrel pressure today.

I'm not going to spend money on 25 cents per shot ammo.....

I realize cleaning a rimfire can be counter productive, but I was somewhat thinking it may help on barrel breakin, whether it needed it or not, & I was grasping at straws at that point.

I believe BR cleaning is more for keeping the carbon ring in check, than actual "cleaning".

On cleaning, last year I bought a Taurus TX-22, & was burning through my stash of W-W Wildcat ammo. Suddenly accuracy went south & bullets were keyholing. A couple three passes every so often with the Bore Snake kept things in check.

Good info, thank you

Alright, now who's the wanker to blame for my latest transgression???

Obviously someone's not listening to their own suggestions.

Someone's also a sucker for a good deal.

Wish me luck.

I can't stop spending on much more expensive things.
The internet consensus is that many who found accuracy issues with this rifle greatly improved accuracy by parting the threaded muzzle and recrossing.
A couple friends have them and give them high marks for accuracy, as always, with the right ammo.

Buddy, I almost followed you down that path.

Thankfully, I plopped down folding money on a Bergara BMR in 22WMR as a big brother to my LR version.

The stubborn side of me said I could beat the average.....I lost....:(

So last night I went out again after supper, beautiful night with absolutely zero wind.

Earlier in the day, I brushed it out a few strokes, gave it a little dose of JB, patched it out & called it good. Looked great through the borescope.

I then loosened the action screws, & torqued them to 30 IP.

Set the target at 50 yards, and pounded out 10 groups of 10 with what I felt was the "best" ammo so far. I also played around with different holds to see if I could find what it liked.

Then I shot groups at different torque settings going up 10 at a time, from the initial 30, stopping at 65. It didn't like the top end, so I went back to 40 & left it there.

I also played with bag tension on the Hart rest, then put a Harris Bipod on it. Nothing clear cut stood out as an advantage.

After another 250 or so rounds, & I never could bust the inch mark, 1 1/4" was about it.

To be continued.......

I just shot my new Ruger American 22RF . All I had for a front Rest was my 3" front rest so the gun flopped all over the place .I have a bipod coming should help . I shot this with Bulk Remington 22 LR . Aguila match , and Armscor 36 gr . I.m pretty happy with what it did , but with some good amo and my luck it will shoot the same . This is my first 22RF in 60 years.

I'd be happy if mine shot that good...ha ha.....

I've been tied up revamping one of my coyote guns, so the Waypoint is/was put in a timeout.

Plan on giving it another good thrashing in a day or 3.

There is a websight called Ky. Rimfire and Hobbies. He bought one and done a series of modifications to improve accuracy. Biggest thing was to recrown the barrel

At this point, I've narrowed it down to W-W 333 bulk, Federal maroon box bulk, & CCI Tactical AR. I stopped at Wally World, & they don't have the W-W 333 count boxes anymore, but had some 555's in stock, all the same lot. I had high hopes they would shoot, I would go back over & buy up all they had. As it turns out, they were no better than any other bulk ammo I had.

For reference, the dots are 3/4" out to out, all "groups" at 50 yards.
