So....Why DID you buy a Savage?

Until Savage actions win more in bona fide competition....they won't get more respect.
Again, in short range Registered BR, they fail to even show up. Shoot them in Factory Class or " Factory Modified" if they don't make weight. The resultant Aggregate scores can then be held to a fair comparison.
Until then, they may only reign in the "Internet Class" ::)
Most of us started competition with a factory , or factory enhanced rifle hoping to win, but with realistic expectations. Most of us, also, welcome new competition to help the sport grow regardless of the name stamped on the action.
There is a difference between bashing and bantering.

For those who failed reading comprehension the title of this thread is why did you buy a Savage? If you don't own one then why are any of you posting in this thread? Trolling probably.

Me? I bought one because I have a lot of disposable income and wanted one.. I have 3. One is an old 99 in 243. The other two are 12's that shoot very small groups out of the box..

I buy savages because I wanted some.I have regular rifles,mods,99's and others including a browning savage patent shotgun. The older ones especially are worth alot of moohlah.I even like them period. Do I like customs, well, absolutely but the thread wasnt supposed to be a bash fest or a chop buster but it always turns out that way.So if you dont want your chops busted go to: www.savageshootersforum.com and have at it.We all like savages over on the other side.Eric you at least found a use for one in a knife fight. If one saved your life you would still break our b%$#@. LOL Have at it eric.

My Savage performed flawlessly at Oak Ridge this weekend. Cant say the same for my windskills but had some very good runs.

Day one witnessed a broken Barnard bolt handle, today I beleive it was a Bat f open gun that trash kept him from closing bolt and put him out a match.

As long as my savage is outshooting my windskills, I will save my money and buy more bullets and powder.

So now Erik the "Savage" has taken up knife fighting? ;)

I guess I missed the OP's intent! Apparently no custom shooters can comment on Savages but it's okay to go off topic and bash a custom..

Come to think about it, the only time I would wish to have a Savage would be...

... at a knife fight! ;D

That's good. LOL! I don't know, as hard as my bolt lift is if you had to load it, it would just be a club. 8)

Why did you buy a Savage.....was the intent....

Banter is always welcome....to me anyways..gotta stay lighthearted or life is no fun!

For me it was a budget and the savage haa enabled me to get experience and stay withing the budget. Otherwise, I would not have gotten to compete as soon

hell i enjoy the bashing let it roll i also own some old savage shotguns that came from my dad and my wifes grandfather. i agree if we can bash a custom what ever the Eriks and so forth shoot why cant they do it to us. hell it wont get my panties in a wad shooting savages was my choice not anyone elses.(nothing personal Erik your name just popped up )

broncman,

This how things are going on here these days. You ask any qusetion, and get everything under the sun, but your answer. Grow up guys, if you can't answer the poster's guestion, stay off the post.

broncman, I got a savage because I wanted one. I wanted a Factory gun that will run with any of them.

I run a Egg Shoot match, and Savage rule factory class 3 to 1. The Savage will be hard pressed to run with Custom guns, but bring your factory gun and try to run with the Savage's.

Mark,

I knew I would get the gamut of answers and some bashing both ways. Their are several disciplines represented here and the BR crowd seem to be the most vocal with their anti Savage stuff but that is fine. Does not bother me. I am a second year FTR 1000 yard shooter and years ago shot some FTR midrange.

Savage HAS won a National Title in FTR. My X count today was 19. The top x count was tied at 20 for all classes. F Open, FTR, ANY ANY, PALMA etc. Now I just have to slow down and catch the switches.

Of course I want a custom action, but currently more money would serve me best buying bullets and powder so I could spend time on the line learning from my mistakes and some of the great shooters I meet.

Have fun guys.....go shooting!

#1: Time. My first savage was the means to a wildcat magnum with short assembly time.
.
#2: Off the shelf rifles in calibers and twist rates that no one else offers in a production gun.
.
#3 Ability to custom configure easily, fast twist-heavy barrel in a new caliber can be done real quickly as in no big deal to change anything. Bolt face, magazine, barrel.
.
Have since fallen in love with the modularity and rapidly expanding component availability of the savage system, and the fact that the ones I have done are at least as accurate as my factory tikka and running laps around my factory remingtons and winchesters just cemented the deal.

Of course we all want customs but it is about disposable income and time, why wait another season to compete, play what you can afford and do it now. Savage is a working mans rifle that is easy to work on and can teach you all the basics of the sport without breaking the bank.

I tried to say what letronshootit said so eloquently. We buy what we can afford.

I have been reading this thread since it first started, matter of fact it is a pretty good read. When I first started to get into competition I knew from the beginning I wanted to go the custom route. However I am getting old and didn't even know if I had the time to wait on a custom build. I had a Stiller drop port on order for over two years and never did get that thing so maybe I was right.

As I was planning my Custom rifle I went and bought a Savage F-Class in 6BR. I didn't know about competition at that time and was completely happy shooting that Savage, even managed a win at Mid Range benchrest from time to time. I sold that F-Class, as a matter of fact I traded it for a Nightforce scope, when the custom was ready.

Today I have 6 match rifles ( all customs ) and there is no comparison between the two. The custom rifles are far superior to the Savage, but why shouldn't they be? I mean hell they cost 4 or 5 times as much and are built to a totally different standard. You can do that when you do one at a time vs mass produced.

The very best thing I have found about Savage rifles is they get more people out there shooting a lot sooner. That is a good thing, and if that is the only plus ( and its not by the way) that is plenty of enough reason for them.
