So....Why DID you buy a Savage?

Did anybody else notice that Erik did NOT reply to my post about friends? Reply #101

Sorry Bill, today is Friday (payday) so I've been busy all day. Also traveling to Houston for the LR State match.

As far as I know, you already bought a custom action and have a Savage for sale. So my friend, you are doing well and don't need me to subsidize your upgrade. ;)

Well my first competition of the year is tomorrow. Oak Ridge! I am sure my wind reading skills are not as good as my Savages ability...

Golfballs out to 300 has always been fun ...

LH,
Now that is funny. Almost as good as the competition stripes. I love it. But it is fun and that's why I shoot. I don't remember saying anything about gongs but if you need that for warm up and site in that can be useful. I'm not sure that you and others even know what twos are. A 1/2 inch hole at 100yds shot with a 6mm bullet is .500-.243= .257 that's a pretty big hole/spread and still in the twos. Ha! 8)

LH I don't shoot in competition, why someone would do all that for a plastic trophy is quite amazing. Which records do you hold and how long have you been shooting competition and have you made a bunch of money doing it?
Have things changed?
Now that I'm retired maybe I should try it for kicks, I always heard that if you were stellar you could pay for gas. 8)

Try and maintain that 100 yd .257" group as follows: Five (5-shot) groups, but space your groups 1/2 hour apart, 10 min. window to shoot... no delaying window to wait out conditions....unlimited sighters .....no do-overs, no mulligans.....you can even shoot at your favorite range with the other benches empty. Tell us how you fared.
I have shot registered score matches for 12 years, no records, some PA State awards, a few agg patches ,bunch of 250 stickers, on occasion enough $ to recoup gas money. Most important of all, it is all documented for posterity that I competed against some of the best shooters in Benchrest history......priceless.

Where are you located? I looked at your profile.....you were a building inspector? >:(, I am a contractor....we're like oil and water 8)

broncman,
Good luck my friend, are you shooting Bench or F class or? I built my Savage because I was curious. Savage really does need to work on their barrels though. I guess like Remington they figure we will replace it if we aren't hunting.
I have allot of fun shooting long range but always work up at 100yds. I think it would be funny if Jewell came out with a trigger for the Savage and just by sheer numbers they were the one to beat. Bashing is fun for some as long as your not the one being bashed. I'm sure someone at the Savage factory is listening.
Out of several guns I own only one is a Savage and really the only thing I don't like is the trigger and it isn't that bad for a factory trigger and actually is probably the best factory trigger except for AI. I have never tried to shoot long range with my Savage only 100yds and I really wish that we could all be on the same side as it really is us shooters against those that just don't get it. What is really funny is that all the boutique actions are Remington knock offs with variations. There is a guy in California named Jim Grunning that builds rifles for the gov and doesn't focus on bench guns. If this guy ever decides to build Savages look out. He won't touch them only Remingtons and ARs. Probably too many moving parts. Anyway this guy makes guns accurate. Like spooky accurate.
Hope you do good,
Matk

LH,
First, I was in construction for 30 years before I got hurt and went back to college and went over to the dark side. We are not oil and water, in fact I get called all the time about what some bonehead inspector or plan checker is asking for and the people that are calling are contractors or developers. Go figure.

Pursuant to your instructions I will try and perform at your standards to see if I can maintain the twos you're requesting. I will be honest about this and even print the target. I do have one question though which I don't understand; once you site in is that a one time thing and each relay is no more site in?
Sincerely,
Mark

Ah, but Erik, I still have one Savage - the PTA that you saw that had a .284 barrel on at the time. As I recall, the very first shots out of that barrel happened on your property.
Anyway, I need subsidized on the remaining Savage. ;)

Varminator- You may re-zero each time on a separate "sighter" target, but it must be with-in the same 10 min. time frame. If need be, you can even re-zero multiple times with-in the 10 minutes in order to keep up with any changing POI. ;D

Smitty and Varminator, time limit in registered group matches is 7 minutes per match. 5 matches for record. Unlimited sighters on each match target. Smitty, you would know this if you weren't one of those stinkin' score shooters. Ha Ha!

Eddie- That's why I never went to group shoots......7 minutes to shoot? It takes me that long just to re-zero to the conditions :o.
If you make it too hard, they will never try registered matches.
Not a surprising comment from you....since you insist on shooting that "old school" 6 power class with a non-custom action.....and Lilja bbls. of all things ::)

It's an addiction trying to get 5 shots in the SAME hole....zero group.....or in a score shooters world obliterating a 1/16" moa dot ( aka a wipeout) on all 25 targets for record. If you don't have it...you wouldn't understand. Matches are won by thousandths of an inch.
I have no clue how one would spend $12 K on ANY BR rig. Apparently, you shot a group around the ones in one session. BR is all about the aggregate...the sum of the days or weekends matches averaged, where every shooter is faced with multiple conditions and is forced to make decisions on how to allow for proper hold-off to allow for POI changes.
This is my reasoning for getting varminator to shoot an aggregate instead of a few groups shot when he can pick and choose when to shoot.
Even rail-gun competitors must know when to pull the trigger.
You left out how your Savage groups compared?

1holeaddict, before you dig the hole any deeper, please take some pictures of the "$12,000.00 Rifle" and post them here or, e-mail them to me. I've been in the BR game for 25 years and have yet to see a $12,000.00 rifle.

Where does it say anywhere in my post say i was willing to track down this gent, ask for receipts, take pictures and email them, to prove something I MYSELF have no idea is true or false???

You're the man who posted this fairy tale. I believe you stated, "..a true, personal experience." "When you find yourself in a hole. Stop digging." Will Rodgers.

first savage i ever owned i got in a trade shot it for many years without a problem fast forward to about 7 years ago i went to a store sell off sale (another store was closing up and this store bought everything in it ) i found a tiger shark in 308 win with scope for 600.00 and it looked sweet so i bought it . took it to the range ange it was shooting great then i found out about a f class match at an old range i use to shoot pistols at went there with a few buds and shot it . people asked me what it was i was shooting and kinda loooked down at us becuase we owned a savage not a remmington after the results came back friend took first me 2nd other friend 5th. got hooked on f class and i always like being an underdog so i was checking out pawn shops and siiting on the glas was a lrpv in 223 with red blade trigger guy want 1200.00 for it so i walked (he also said he was wanting it for his self) later i called back and talked to the manager and told him that was just about what they cost new and what was his cash price one time offer (750.00) went back and picked it up . now thats 3 savages so far short time later i found a site online that deals in savages only (info) and started reading about what you the owner could do with them without taking them to a gunsmith and it has been love ever since .my whole family shoots them as well as f class with shoot a 223 i put together son 243 hunting rifle and shoots the wife gun in matches for me i got rid of all my remingtons (bolts, semi and pumps) to found other biulds (308 ,308,6.5CM) and when my friend moved to new mexico i biult him a 308 using the tigershark barrel and my old 300 win mag action as a going away present .
i seem to be able to find rifle at pawn shops cheap enough and components online cheap enough that i continue to put them together

With all the posts I thought I would just have to ask something.

Is it true that all the custom riflesmiths are getting day jobs on the Savage production line?

So they can see how a real rifle is made?

Having thrown gasoline everywhere, I let someone else light the match!

Wonder if the web site will crash?

Can I get $1 for everytime someone bashes a Savage? I could retire at the age of 28!!! I think these threads should be deleted. They pop up over and over and same people bash Savage and same people agree they are decent actions if you are on limited budget and all you can afford.

Funny thing is I am a relatively new shooter to FTR, only 3 matches under my belt, and I have out shot some higher classified shooters that use more expensive custom actions/barrels and NF scopes and $1000 stocks. So how is it my Savage PTA/CBI barrel/FTR Savage stock out shot them?

Come to think about it, the only time I would wish to have a Savage would be...

... at a knife fight! ;D

Until Savage actions win more in bona fide competition....they won't get more respect.
Again, in short range Registered BR, they fail to even show up. Shoot them in Factory Class or " Factory Modified" if they don't make weight. The resultant Aggregate scores can then be held to a fair comparison.
Until then, they may only reign in the "Internet Class" ::)
Most of us started competition with a factory , or factory enhanced rifle hoping to win, but with realistic expectations. Most of us, also, welcome new competition to help the sport grow regardless of the name stamped on the action.
There is a difference between bashing and bantering.
