So....Why DID you buy a Savage?

So, 85 replies and I have been proven right. Not a single Savage owner has answered "Quality" or "Great trigger". Almost everyone of you has bought one because they are the "CHEAPEST"!

Thanks you all for reinforcing what I have been saying all this time. Oh, and remember.... Friends don't let friends shoot Savages! ;)

Erik, I seem to recall you called me a friend. Well, if friends don't let friends shoot Savages, then friends should contribute the cost difference between the Savage and the custom. I will even let you pick the custom. Make it a right bolt left port, please. ;)

Oh, and I almost forgot. When you factor in the cost, my two Savages are at the top of the quality chart. And I love my accu-triggers now that I have tweaked them a little. Let's not forget that they are a factory mass produced rifle and a little tweaking should be expected.

You are never going to win eric over and I think he simply loves yanking our chain. As far as corvettes are concerned I really love the buggy spring and sloppy bushing front end in them. Yea it works, why bother when you can just buy a porsche and get a real car.The savage is the corvair so to speak but I have seen many introductions from remington I would be embarresed to buy. The 700 is superior period. The savage on the other hand is an affordable fun little gun to enjoy shooting. It is a riot to customize them and do it yourself. I have one that shoots in the one's consistenly and love the thing.Lets just let it lay and agree to disagree.Nomad I am with you!

"I have one that shoots in the ones.....". Then you should take it to the Super Shoot and take their money. I believe it is statements like this that cause serious BR shooters to laugh out loud at the shooter who claims "Groups in the ones" with a factory rifle. One group, one time doesn't mean much to a serious BR shooter.

My last match at 1000 at Midwest Benchrest, my stock factory 12F shot a 4.674 ( match 12, 2012). It has shot the smallest group between all three classes at a match. Savages are accurate, but slower on bolt speed and heavier on trigger pull. I had a SSS 2 oz trigger on a light rifle that worked well. They are the best way to get new shooters to inexpensively start shooting competitively. Custom actions are, of course, an advantage.

I have only three customs and actually they aren't real customs at all but are "accuracy enhanced" production Winchesters and Remingtons. With the right hand loads they will consistently shoot in the ones and twos. Not once one time but consistently.

If that is a winning formula then I guess the customs aren't really what they are cracked up to be :D. Maybe they just are better for bragging rights. If I bought a custom and chose to waste my time shooting benchrest (a big money sport ::)) I would want/expect no less than consistent zeros.

The reason I bought a Savage (which is the topic) instead of a Stiller or a Bat or any other boutique action was my intended use and not bragging rights; The same reason I have a Corvette instead of an Audi R-7. There are plenty of people that don't race their bone stock car (why would they) but enjoy driving it.

I enjoy shooting my Savage as it shoots pretty good now that I put an after market barrel on it (6.5 X 47). I haven't done enough loading for it to make the claim that it will consistently shoot in the ones but it will pretty much shoot in the twos and threes and occasionally ones and zeros. It is a target action in an after market stock with nothing done to it. As far as "factory" rifles go it is on par with a good Remington as opposed to a mediocre one. If I could have one "Savage" wish though it would be that Arnold Jewell would make a trigger for it.

All this noise over Savage, Corvettes and customs. Apples, oranges and figs. Are there really Savage owners out there that think their stock Corvette will compete in ALMS? 8)

Memo to varminator: Centerfire Benchrest Comp's start at 100 yards. 25 yard shooting is for air guns or action pistol ::)
So to determine your accuracy standard to what you can expect at 100 yards multiply your 1's (0.100") and 2's (0.200) by a factor of at least 4.

Syncrowave,

My jaws are cramping from laughing. That is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. You're good.

I like yellow with red flames, those almost always shoot in the ones.

LH,
So if we are talking only 100 should we divide by 2 if we were thinking 200??

Consistent .1s? I doubt it. I doubt consistent .2s. And anyone expecting consistent .0s is going to be let down. Gotta love the internet. ::)

Very short sighted in your comments. In almost comments they are hunting rifles not really anything more than that. It does not take a true hunting rifle to blast deer and other game critters. :)

Come on you guys spending all that money on customs gotta be shooting at least zeros and ones. Hall and Alf shoot at least that good though they shoot the long stuff in comp. Anyone here is more than welcome to come out to the desert and shoot golf balls at long range with me. I prefer Titleist, the best use for them actually, with a 105 Berger they "tulip" before spinning away. We can start at 50yds until you get the hang of it before we move out to 600yds. Out at Calico is the perfect spot, it is really fun as long as there aren't 50 shooters.

Yep, golf balls and gongs........where the real competition is at. ::) Let us know what the worlds records are so we can practice for the 2014 internationals.
Is there a cash option? Can you win barrels, scopes? You got a point system? HOF?
BTW is a "tulip" kinda like a wipeout in VFS?

LH,
Now that is funny. Almost as good as the competition stripes. I love it. But it is fun and that's why I shoot. I don't remember saying anything about gongs but if you need that for warm up and site in that can be useful. I'm not sure that you and others even know what twos are. A 1/2 inch hole at 100yds shot with a 6mm bullet is .500-.243= .257 that's a pretty big hole/spread and still in the twos. Ha! 8)

LH I don't shoot in competition, why someone would do all that for a plastic trophy is quite amazing. Which records do you hold and how long have you been shooting competition and have you made a bunch of money doing it?
Have things changed?
Now that I'm retired maybe I should try it for kicks, I always heard that if you were stellar you could pay for gas. 8)
