Lots of cartridges will do what you need, bullet choice may be the more important consideration.

The OP said he doesn't hunt LR he didn't say he NEVER will maybe not at present time maybe down the road he might.
He did say he wants the extra " Juice".
Like I said I never build a gun to limit myself i suggest do the same, things change.

I have a 7mm BC with an 18" barrel and am very happy with it. I got it this spring and it will be going to Wyoming for cow/calf elk hunting this winter moving my 7mm PRC to backup. Accuracy is good, 1 MOA out to 300 yds, which is all the further I have been able to shoot it. 175 gr Terminal Ascent is going 3008 fps according to my magnetospeed.

FWIW, just saw this... no idea who this guy is, but it doesn't look very promising. Apparently still bugs to be worked out by either Federal, Salvage, or maybe both.

Kinda like new car models... never buy one the 1st year they come out.

Like a lot of shooters I have seen the damage caused by a 65,000 psi cartridge case failure. I can't imagine what will be the result of an 80,000 psi case failure. I think this guy was just really lucky. I would not buy one.
I think he will continue to have problems with this gun in the future. He needs to have it checked by a competent smith.

I was also thinking of the damage to his truck tail gate. Where I live, it would cost as much to fix the ding as it does to buy another rifle.

I think I will bypass the latest marketing gimmick. 80000 psi operating pressure is simply not where I want to be. Barrel life has to be pretty close to terrible.

Velocity doesn't kill, accurate shots kill. Fast bullets while shooting flatter can miss quicker if the accuracy isn't there. While everyone tries for the best and perfect setup, you will be better off with a rifle that is comfortable and easy to carry for miles. Most people don't take 1/4 moa F-class rigs out on elk hunts.

Makes me wonder how much of our tax money will be going to replacement barrels for military applications?? These things will wear out quicker than street tires on a drag car the way our boys and girls spray ammo :O

A 6.5PRC or 7PRCW makes a great hunting rifle with a 20" barrel. My 7PRCW gets over 2900 fps with 153gr Hammers. I shoot it suppressed.

Before doing a 7BC build, I'd need to see that the brass can be reloaded many times with no loss of performance. I'm interested in how well it goes.

You say you don't hunt long range...consider a 358 Sambar (358-300WSM). With the increased bore volume you use faster burning powders than the 300WSM and have more volume in the short barrel to burn them. I have a weakened version of one (1.8" case length version with the shoulder moved significantly back) and it is a hard hitter. Love the 225 Accubonds in it.

Looking back thru this thread, I am the only poster who owns a 7BC and I like it. Take that for what it is worth.

I imagine the discussion was very similar when firearms switched from black powder to smokeless. Exciting times we live in!

There weren't cartridges out then that will do exactly what the 7BC will do today

Only a handful of new cartridges become a success. It's a lot of time and money to invest in something that might flop like the Valkyrie. If that doesn't bother you, go for it.
