Should I buy a Savage F/TR in 223 or build an AR for my 600yd rig?

Should I buy a Savage F/TR in 223 or build an AR for my 600yd rig?

Trying to decide which route to go. I personally love a bolt action, and don't want having an AR be a pain in the ass on the line.

Thoughts?

Do they mix semi auto's with bolt guns on one line? Both can be accurate with good barrels. It depends on what discipline you choose I would guess.

Bolt gun then as far as I am concerned. You can single load an ar with a sled but the bolt is less fusing around for me.

I am seeing AR-10's on the line.

I have a DPMS AR-10 with a custom barrel. It hangs in there with the rest of the 308's.

It's your choice, but I personally prefer a bolt.

A Savage F/TR 223 7 twist holds it own when you do your part.

223's are becoming very popular in F/TR MR matches. AR-15 and bolt actions.

I shoot an AR-15 in F-class. It has a 26 inch Krieger 1.77 twist barrel chambered in their 5.56 Match offering. I shoot 80gr bullets out of it and it is silly accurate.

Over the years, I tricked out the rifle quite a bit with everything designed to make it work great at F-class prone. The stock is the Magpul PRS offering. The trigger is a Geissele HiSpeed match. I have a CS buffer spring from Tubb's outfit, as well as his pistol grip. I also run his CWS with the heavy carbide insert. I use a Bobsled instead of a regular magazine and I also got their trhough-the-triggerguard bolt release.

shootnjunky and jonbearman could not be more wrong; a properly outfitted AR-15 is much simpler and faster to use on the line than a bolt gun. As long as my target puller does a great job and my scorer is awake and keeping up with the shots, I can load and fire my AR-15 without even breaking cheekweld. I load a cartridge in the loading port and push it a good way into the chamber with my shooting hand then I place the hand back on the pistol grip, aim, use the trigger finger to release the bolt and then pull the trigger. Then I load the next cartridge and repeat. Fast, easy, accurate. What's not to like?

Also, since the case is ejected before it can transfer the bulk of its heat to the chamber, the rifle runs cooler than a bolt; there is not way you can operate a bolt fast enough before the case transfers all its heat to the chamber.

However, all that said, I believe it costs more to make an AR-15 awesomely accurate compared to a bolt gun. You can do a lot of the work yourself, but the each part costs more.

If you have an existing AR-15 and you know how to work on it, it's a toss-up. If you are looking at starting from scratch, go for the Savage. It's ready to go out of the box; just add scope, bipod and great ammo.

I have a bone stock sav 223 12f/tr that shoots great out to 600 even though I have had to use it at a couple matches to 1K. Under 600 I would put it up against any f/tr rig ;D I use 82 berger bt with varget.Last year at Can am it shot a clean at 300 all x but wasnt NRA match so didnt get to keep shooting for record.
