Short range police round?

284winner may have said it best, leave it alone if it isn't broken.

We can micro focus on minutia but the reality is that within the 300 yard limitation and all the tasks required, there is nothing that will perform a great deal better than the 308 in the all around tasks.

Do I hear a second for the nomination of the 45/70 in a Winchester 1886... ;)

Not identical as to firearm or exact ballistics, but more folks have been "stopped" on this continent with this category of terminal ballistics than all others combined. Check out "one-shot stopping power" data from 1861 to 1865.
worked for the LEO in Wind River!

I remember when my brother and I were kids, like 11 and 8 years old.. we would watch those those movies and yell out the identification of the firearms used when we saw something new. I was 8. I was so young, I really didnt know what all the numbers were about, but I sure was trying and beat my brother at blurting out the info.

Another thing that has only been very briefly if at all discussed is the fact that the 308 has been the go to round for so long that there is much more training material published for it than already exists for other rounds. I am not terribly familiar with how local agencies train, but I am guessing it is not in house, so it does make some sense to pick a round that whoever is doing the training has materiel for.

Got me wondering- if shots are known to be relatively short range, 300 yards and in, what would be some rounds to consider? So if the Bad guy decides to not be at 300yds or less the police just go home? just because most shots are close doesn't mean that they don't have to be ready for a long shot. Some deptments only train for the short stuff but that doesn't mean a long shot will never be necessary, I think that is why the 308 is the obvious choice

Off-topic: I do know that the CA Fish and Game guys (would have been in the late 90's/early 00's , I think) started carrying M1A's in addition to the normal shotgun + AR-15, due to the numerous MJ grows (made for a fairly crowded long gun rack in their trucks.) The warden I knew said some guys complained that they were getting deflected shots when shooting through vegetation (no idea if this was true or not, but the addition of the 308 was fact.)
Not too long back, I/We serviced F&G rigs. Always told the officers I would ring out their M1A's any time they needed. ;):DGood bunch of Guys.

That's all pretty much the case. If you read the books by John Nores, he talks about the cartel grow sites and the efforts to put a stop to them. He also helped CAF&W select the POF Revolution in 308 (to replace the M1A) as standard issue across the state. Pretty interesting books.

Off topic but I'm pretty sure I own one of these. Bought it from J&G surplus around 2013. The opinion on M14 forum was that some hot sold when they switched platforms. I have no proof but the timeliness do work out. It's a LE marked ban Era Bush model.

Our dept carried 22-250's for many years. I would argue that any shot taken that was not effective was a poor choice of ammunition or incompetent shooter.
