Short barrel Dasher vs GT

Hey guys,
Not a typical 6gt vs dasher thread.
I’m currently building a comp rifle but I’m torn between the dasher and the GT, not because of the competition part, but because I’m also thermal hunting with a second barrel. (I change barrels at home.)

The intention is to run a 20-22” medium profile barrel on the thermal gun in either the dasher or GT with an 80gr pill. Pretty much kills anything I need.

I’m trying to find people
With first hand experience and velocity data for either in a short barrel. The rifle +thermal is already very damn heavy to pull in and out of the truck, so a nice short stubby barre would be nice. Just not sure how much I’ll loose with the dasher, but I do like the 4+ less grains of powder it burns.

Thanks! Any experience is appreciated.

Jim,
Sounds like a fun project. I run a 6Dasher at 22" suppressed . All I can say is, it is one of my personal favorites. I run the 95 gr Berger VLD at about 2950 fps. It is absolutely deadly on varmints out to 750 yds or so. This is not a hot load at all, just where it shoots bugholes! I would build another in a heartbeat. Hope this helps.

I have 2 20” BRs and a 22” GT barrel. I also have a 20” GT build comin.

Just be wise with your powder choice and you’ll be fine with anything in that range. I shoot N135 and N140 with 68-88 gr bullets. Speed is NO problem.

I have a XP100 in 6mm Dasher with a 17in barrel. I can run 88gr Bergers at 2875fps using 33.6gr of varget. and 107SMKs at 2625fps using 32.6gr of RL-15. Hope that helps ya.

Jim, I'm using a 22" barrel on my 6 GT. With the 70 Gr. Nosler BT, I'm getting 3450 fps and with the 87 Gr. Berger I'm getting 3060 fps average. Neither one are hot loads at all. I shot the 6 GT this morning at steel out to 600 yards and chronographed it over 10 shots . That should give you some indication of velocity with an 80 Gr. from a 22" barrel. I was using Varget.

Check out this 16 inch 6 Dasher pistol

Guys that’s awesome I for!
20” BR

68-3375
80- 3220
88-3000

22” GT

88- 3240

That’s all I can remember.

Stay away from Varget.
Guys awesome info thanks everyone!
That’s exactly the confidence I need!

Why stay away from Varget sir? Do you find it’s dirty, poor es/sd or other? Very curious!

It is dirty, but that doesn’t bother me. I clean a lot. It does have very narrow nodes, and it’s horribly slow in a GT with light bullets. It’s also too slow for the BR/BRA with light and medium weights. You’ll need a faster powder, especially in a short barrel.

Will it work? Sure. Varget works in almost anything (like your longer comp barrel), but it is FAR from optimal for what you’re doing on the thermal barrel.

I’d consider a Dasher with Varget for comps, and a BR or GT with N135 or N140 for thermal.

I got heaps of 2106H which should do the job nicely. Good to know it’s too slow for a shorty :) thanks bud.

2206H sorry typo. It’s great and versatile, relatively fast burning. It’s sold to Hogden by ADI as H4895. Same powder. You get a bit more kick for shorter barrels and can load from 223 to 308 :) I tend to get lower es/sd with it in lighter pills. Very clean burning too.
My coyote hunting buddy is using H4895 in his GT with 80s.

The 6BRX has the same ballistics as a Dasher. Just load and shoot to FF. I have not shot the 6BRX much due to back surgery. Also have a 6BR since 2009. 14 twist 24 inch barrel. Shoots 58 Gr Hornady at 3600 fps with 8208 or H322. no pressure signs. 24" barrel I would expect 3700 fps in a 6BRX. I wouldn't worry about what fps you get with a short barrel. Whatever you get will be more than enough for varmint hunting.
