6 Dasher vs 6GT

Kindabitey, Thanks for the pics...as stated, I think it would be a good way to extend the life of a barrel chambered in 6br, Dasher, etc. Plus, I understand all the debate over if we "need" another cartridge. Heard something once, a n d it's true, where else but in America , would we have an appliance that cooks a meal in minutes, and another that takes 6-8 hours (microwave and crock pot) and 99% of homes would have both! This country is still the best option option in the world, we have choices, enjoy them until they get taken away...rsbhunter

Question - please expand on why/how the 6GT can't come close to Dasher or 6BR AI. Are you referring to accuracy/precision of the cartridges, and if so then what is the difference that you have experienced and possible reason for it?

I have been waiting to see how accuracy of 6GT compared to Dasher. Thanks

The same reason the BR-AI has become more popular over the Dasher. The smaller BR based cartridges tune better/smaller.

Will a GT shoot small in 1000 yard Benchrest. Sure, I'm sure we will see some guys running it with heavier 115 grain high BC bullets. But, on a nice calm morning, 9/10 guys are going to be running some combo of a Dasher/BR-AI/BRX etc.

But, if you don't want to take my recommendation, then by all means, (And honestly what everyone should do,) build a GT for yourself and do your own testing! Come up with your own reasons for why a dasher is better than a GT or vice versa, rather than take someone else's advice.

Thanks. I have no experience with the BR or Dasher. At the moment I don't compete in any competitions, benchers or PRS, but just shoot for myself. I was contemplating a new 6mm chambering that would maintain my accuracy, but with the added benefit of increased barrel life with lower powder charge then my 243Improved. This is what peeked my interest in 6GT plus reliable magazine feeding, but if the accuracy isn't there then its a no start for me. obvious downside for 6GT is no Lapua brass...

Go for the 6xc. Tubb had Petersen brass for 68 cents and it is running just as good as Lapua. He has small and large rifle primer brass. What kind of action were you going to build?

I have searched and read all I can find on the newer GT case, but want some input from a different perspective.

I have had a straight BR and then had a short stent with a 6x47. I had great accuracy from both but felt the case capacity of the ‘47 was unnecessary and had been planning to go with a dasher for this next barrel. BUT, I’ve never liked the short neck, despite so many other great attributes of the little case.

Then I considered the long neck Norma chamber but there is no consensus on that brass.

Now the new GT case is coming out and Alpha brass will be available. It seems to me that might be a great case with the advantage of a longer neck than the Dasher, a little less capacity than the 6x47 and be able to shoot 105 and even the heavier 110’s out to 1000 if needed.

So, since I don’t already have dies for anything, I’m just really drawn to the attributes of the GT for benchrest accuracy at mid-to-long range.

Any thoughts? Am I missing something?
Yes your missing quite a lot. The BR based cases regardless of neck length win lots of matches all across the country. I don't know of ever being at a match with a GT in attendence, unless someone drove it there.I have shot a BRX, shortest neck of all, with sucess for 10 yrs or so, I want to be competitive not a pioneer. Sometimes I think guys want to shoot some 'Greatest New Thing' so they can be noticed, not because they think they will win with it. Please don't take this as a personal affront to you it is opinion I have formed from the posts I read and the results I view. I guess if your not competitive or unwilling to do the work to be competitive, you look for another avenue to pursue.Just my thoughts.

I just built a 22 GT and I would make one comment from the above. I am having feeding issues, much the same as with the BR cartridges the rounds nose down on feeding. I am not using the BR mag kits.
As for capacity and merits of the round. IDK. The capacity fit my needs very well but in most cases I sure wouldn't pick one over the other and I don't believe the hype.

Has the 6mm GT been promoted as a bench rest round? I was under the impression it was geared more toward the prs discipline? From the video with George Gardiner (sp) it was promoted as a cartridge that helps with feeding from a magazine, neck angle, etc. Not owning one, can't attest to accuracy, or lack of, but I think it's being portrayed as a br cartridge, when that was not the end goal of the design ? As far as not needed, sales will determine that, kinda like natural selection......rsbhunter

I'm pretty sure It's not being marketed as a benchrest cartridge, but can't think of any reason why you couldn't use it for that. A couple of the ideas behind the GT were
a 35 degree shoulder angle to ease feeding from box mags and case volume for H4350.
I've owned a 6BR, 6Dasher, and now have a GT. The only difference I can see between the three, is a little bit of speed, and I can use RL16 in the GT.

The GT will be at least everything your 243AI is from an accuracy standpoint everything thing being equal. The Hornady GT brass is in a completely different class from what people are generally used to from Hornady. Alpha Brass is an excellent option if you feel better paying more. If you’ve never had one, I’d suggest you try a straight 6br and get ready to be completely swept off your feet and fall in love. It’s so hard to make one shoot bad and you can learn a lot about your personal shooting technique that is lacking making “your gun” shoot bad. If you want a repeater, get a quality Smith to install quality bottom metal into a quality stock and use genuine Accuracy International AICS magazines. IF for some reason you have issues with this set up then resort to the available BR mags or spacer kits.
