shilen barrel looks like savage factory barrel

Did my first chambering job on an action from start to finish this past week and one thing I noticed is the 8mm barrel blank I got looks as if there is train tracks running down the length of the barrel. Not only that but after doing the initial test fire in the booth there was visible copper as far as you could see down the bore with the naked eye. I have yet to pull the copper so I will take pictures once I clean it of the patches. I know this is just going to be a hunting rifle but when you pay money for a factory barrel you expect to get what you pay for and factory quality bore is not what I expected.

Minesweeper3433: Like you, I was also caught off guard and surprised when I bought a chrome-moly Shilen blank, having bought nothing but stainless prior. My gunsmith called and said I might want to bring my borescope & inspect the condition of the bore before he began his $$$$$ work. Way too many cross reamer and tool marks for me.

Contacted Shilen, they said to return it, they would air-gauge the bore & if there was enough diameter they would hand-lap for an extra $40 charge, bringing the cost to what I had been paying for the stainless barrels.

It was all done, the barrel came back looking like a Krieger or Bartlein, and it turned out to be very accurate with little or no copper fouling.

I just wish they would have made it clear from the beginning that hand-lapped chrome-moly barrels are an extra cost option.

The real problem is that the education takes many years. By the time that you know what you need to know to get by in this world your life is over. It's time to die. None of us ever learn it all.

I decided that I am going to leave it as is due to it's nature as a hunting rifle in 8mm mauser for my father, a lapped finish is not required. In other news I got an A on the assignment so very happy with that. Now to finish the rest of it and see how she shoots.

I borescope and slug every barrel I chamber. I have been looking at those chrome moly barrels mid way sells. there shilen and they are only 150 bucks. Maybe I should just pass, or learn to lap barrels. Not sure I really care to learn though. LOL!!! Lee

My rifle smith inspects (with a borescope) every barrel before he reams them. It's just common sense to avoid customer complaints after hours of work expended in installing a new barrel.
