Scope settings hard to read at various yardages

A newby at longer yardages, 200 plus, I am having trouble setting scope. Old eyes having trouble reading, counting, remembering (sometimers I guess) exact clicks. Using same load, could I place some tape around the turret and mark the yardage come-ups on it, or is there a better way? Right now, shooting comp at 200-400-100 yds, no sighters or flags. Thanks. Ron.

I have a hunting rifle that I have the top of the turret marked with a dremmel to give me quick adjustment out to 700 yrds. Or you can put a sticker on top and mark lines on it.

tape a settings card to the side of your stock in whatever units you use. I have done this for years either inches or clicks (moa). I usually put it on the side near the front ring of the action.

Check out your local hobby shop or office supply for model paint or Sharpie's... My daughter has plenty nail polish colors and a blunt toothpick works too... A little dot will do ya...

My scope doesn't have target turrets :( I had all my comeups (and downs) written down, but going from 200y to 400y (like up 22 clicks, I got mixed up and from there on was completely lost. Then I couldn't see my holes at 400y, had first 2 about 8"(I sawafter pulling them) hi, but panicked and went up 4 more, and things just went to H### ::) Then from 400y back down to 100y :'( Looks like at this point, I just need to get my S### together, lol.

Here is my 200y targets, First cold bore shot, and 10 more shots. It's not that great, but I took it. About 3rd out of 10, or thereabouts. This was on setting I kept from testing earlier. Thanks for the tips. Ron

The kind of turrets you have are meant for hunting where you set them for say a 200 yard zero and memorize hold over from there. You really need target turrets - makes life so much easier.

I agree, target knobs do make life easier, you will continuely have loss of where your scope is using those kind of scopes, another thing to consider when the time comes, buy a scope that the turrets match the knobs, ie MOA/MOA, or Mil/Mil, DO NOT buy a MilDot scope with MOA knobs.

Look's like a better scope is in the works. Would be great if somebody made add on turrets for the Whitetail Hunter I have now. Will have to look around. I did try your link to custom turrets, Maxscm, but got a warning from AVG. Thanks for the tip though. Maybe I can google that. Ron.

HI Ron,,,you are experiencing the very thing we all go thru when we start shooting frequently at various distances,,,,it is so handy to "crank" the scope and with the "hunting" style turrets it is very dificult to do with eaze.....it is so handy to be able to see the graduations on the turret with out getting up over the knob and have a scope that will reliably repeat the setting from short to longer and bak,,,most hunting scopes wont do this even with turrets installed,,this is the reason long range varmint hunters and target shooters pay the big buks for their scopes,,,if you could do it with a 300$$ scope we would do it!!!!,,,,,Roger

Get some add-on target knobs...wrap the elevation in tape that can be written on....mark the shooting zeros for each range..easy to read no memory involved... no counting....easy to replace as you use other bullets..powder..etc..LT

Just got off the tele with Simmons (now Bushnell, also B&L optics). They do not have any add on turrets. He mentioned Kenton, but custom turret might run over $100. I would rather get a better scope with factory turrets. Any other places that might have the add on turrets for my Simmons? Your idea sounds great DOGCAPPER. BTW (light bulb, lol), I am right in Best of the West territory, even know/have shot with J. Porter who I think developed the long range Huskemaw scope system. Maybe I will talk to them. Thanks again, Ron.

Not sure if this will fit yours or not, but wanted to post it for your review.

I stopped into Wyoming Armory and chatted with Keith and Steve. Keith runs the monthly tactical type matches in Cody, that I am trying to compete in. What a great bunch of guys, willing to answer any of my stupid questions. Keith showed me his Niteforce with MOA turrets. Seem's to be best when using diff loads, etc. over the one's with yardage marks for a specific load. He mentioned some, Nikon, Viper, maybe others. I will have to do some more research and priceing. What a place to live in, with so many shooting related industries and World Champions to chew the fat with (ie Steve Garbe and John Porter, maybe others I don't know about)!!

Ron - are you hunting with this rifle any, or just shooting targets?

If just targets, look into a 24x weaver fixed. Great glass for the money, and includes target turrets. $400ish new, used for less sometimes.

If you are hunting, find yourself a deal on an older leupold with the Phillips coin style slit in the knobs and get a Stoney point add-on turret for about $25.

Matt, have been looking at the Weaver T24 and like it. However, all I see is 1/8" clicks. A post several years ago mentioned they also had 1/4". Tried to find a pic of the turrrets, but no luck. They do say an extra set of target turrets? Did see turrets on the V series, didn't look too bad, but then 1/8" also. Maybe 1/8 no big deal, since 1 moa is 1 moa, no matter which, and the tracking is reportedly very good. I will continue to look at these, a real value, I think, given their high ratings from users. BTW, this is target shooting, 100 to 400yd+. Have several other hunting rifles, but don't do much anymore. Thanks for the tip. Ron.

No worries about 1/8 clicks because most target turrets are clearly labeled. For example, on my 10-50 Sightrons, if I want 6.5 MOA, I do a quick turn of the turret to 6, then go four more clicks. I'm thinking you are used to counting clicks and see 1/8 clicks as a whole bunch of counting.
