Scope issue — Changing POI

I just switched bbls on my 6-47L. Had it chambered a couple years ago and ran 100 rounds through back then to FF brass and break in. No load development. 1/4 to 1/3 inch groups. I took it off and ran my old tube a while longer. Put the new tube on this winter and was struggling with groups during load development. 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch 3 shot groups @100. YUCK Figured it COULD be me....out of the game for a year and all. Screwed action to a BR stock and went out with 75 rounds sunday. Pure unhappyness. Couldn't hold zero. Tried shooting my 300 to 1000 yard steel and all over the place. I came back to the hundred yard line and off by 2 inches and 2 inch group. Pulled the suppressor and the next two shoots were 6 moa:mad:. Back home I went through the gun again......action screws, scope rings, bases, all good. I replaced the scope and, since it had 75ish rounds through it, I cleaned it. Went out and shot a 1/4 MOA 5 shot group at 100 with the new scope without the suppressor..

Now, I know to only fix one thing at a time, and I did 2, replaced scope and cleaned. Would a dirty gun turn a 1/4 MOA gun to a 6 moa gun? Should I go out and shoot the original scope again with the tube clean, or just send the scope to NF? We are in what looks to be an extended warm strech and the range is pure mud now.

Thanks,
Tod

Send it back. They have great CS. Tommy Mc

Loose barrel? Loose scope? Loose scope mounts? I've never owned a gun that shot 6 MOA. The closest I've had were a Mini 14 and a 30 carbine. Those would shoot 4 MOA. They didn't last long in my safe.

Put the scope back on and try it again. I bet it was a loose scope mount/base. Plus shooting it again would save you being out of the scope for a while and save the shipping cost. Also then you will know for sure what the problem was.

A dirty bore will not turn a rifle into a 6 moa gun..

Yea test with the old scope. But to answer your question, if it had a bunch of copper in it, it could shoot that bad. Saw a brand new gun, with maybe 150 rounds through it start shooting bad and was shooting a 12 inch group at 100yds. The American distributer told the guy to clean it with Butch's Bore Shine and the owner wouldn't believe him. After bore scoping and cleaning it several times it was back to 3/4 inch groups, just in time for a Col. elk trip.

I had a Leupold scope fail during a match. Point of impact at 600 yards was shifting 3-4 FEET from shot to shot. Lesson: When a scope fails, the results can be pretty dramatic.

It should be fairly straight forward to determine if the scope is defective. It may take a few range trips, but it will show on target. You already understand that you have to keep all the other variables the same and isolate the scope.

As far as the bore condition, clean to your baseline. If necessary, from your baseline, shoot a few fouling shots to establish as starting test position for testing your scope.

I had one go bad on me last year. My groups would shift from left to right about 2" or so at 100 yards. The difficulty was that sometimes it would hold zero. I always suspect me first since I am the weak link. However, after several range trips I began to suspect the scope. I replaced the scope and the problem disappeared which is fairly conclusive evidence.

A dirty barrel with 75 rounds should not shoot that bad. I shoot that many in a typical f class match and the rifle is still shooting just as good at the end of the match as it was at the beginning.

You said you removed the suppressor and shot the small group clean the suppressor I find my to be the issue most of the time when things go sideways

Gun shot very big......took the suppressor off and it shot even bigger. I changed scope and gun shot very small (1/4 inch 5 shot @ 100) without suppressor. Did not try suppressor with new scope. Not the suppressor, as I use it on a few different tubes without issue.

Another scope bites the dust.
