School me on Remington actions

1st question what prefix is best? Been told the RR actions are cnc based & are very true factory setups?

2. If a guy buys a take off barrel can you thread it on & check headspace & be done or does a gunsmith have to set the headspace? Sorry if the questions are simple I've been a Savage barrel nut guy for the whole time & need to build my next gun on a 700 platform
 
As far as "best" I don't know about best, but accuracy wise, I've had good luck with the 70's blued version. I have seen that many shooters and smiths commented on the RR's not needing any truing or not needing much. I have barreled up several and they shot very well. The ones I have had seemed to be accurately machined to the point I wouldn't bother. That said I am not making them into benchrest rifles either...if I needed that I would not try to do it with a 700 to begin with.
As far as headspace goes, yes a takeoff factory "non-barrel nut" barrel will need to be properly head spaced on a 700.
 
If the barrel came from another gun you would have to have headspace gages. They all are not the same headspace wise. I got lucky once but again I use gages to check my work. They make remage nuts to change the remingtons to adjustable headspace.
 
I have had a few take-off barrels installed on hunting rifles. All headspaced within specs. The factory lettering (and iron sights, if any) typically do not properly align, but that's minor.
 
I've built a lot of rifles on remington actions. The new RR actions are generally straighter. Not the same can be said for the bolts. I enlarge the boltway and replace the bolts anyway.

I've ordered a lot of actions and I've bought a few cheap rifles as "donors". I find the fit and finish much better on the actions sold as action only. They are cheap from Bud's and I recommend going this route. If you want single shot, there is only one option and that is the SS SA version--which can accommodate up to 300NM since it is single shot.

I have built half a dozen from Buds Actions in the last 6 months. I loved the results so much I am building my entire online store around the concept. I plan to have all the parts to build a match quality bench or F Class rifle from a Remington 700 action. Bolt together and go shoot. We were talking about the concept at the gun show a few weekends back and we figured it up.

Revolution aluminum bedding block stock from me. $499
Action from Buds with X mark trigger $340
Recoil lug from me for Rev stock $32
Barrel from me $235 (6br, 6bra, 6xc, 223a, 223)
Barrel nut from me $34
Bat polished trigger guard with action screws (from me) around $65

That is $1200.

You will need a picatinny rail. I use the EGW for around $40. They are site sponsor.

A headspace gauge and few hours of assembly and you have rifle that will shoot. You can choose to upgrade if you want (like a Jewel trigger) an glass is as much as you want to spend.

David Tubb told me that there are lots of bolt improvements that can be done.

I figure the bone stock cnc Remington 700 with a good barrel, in a good stock with a good caliber is plenty for the vast majority of weekend shooters. If you want to jump up in performance get a Bat or a Defiance.

I did have one action that the bolt had ZERO primary extraction.

That is not true. I am not sure why you would say that. It is obviously not true.

I had that bolt set up by Dan 40x and is has MORE primary extraction for sure than a stock one, but not an enormous amount. Adding a ton of primary extraction leads to other issues, like having a crazy amount of cock on close. The action in my new tube gun has a nice amount of primary extraction and works really well even with the 6bra which really needs the extraction at the top at high pressures.

All of my RR remingtons have excellent extraction. Of course I've changed out the bolts to PTG.

Most have moderate extraction as received. Some plumbers who true them up remove so much material off the lugs that they no longer have extraction...stay away from plumbers with a lathe.

If my BFF Dan welded the bolt handle on in the right position then cock on close should not be a problem. if the handle is in the right place (it is on PTG 1 piece bolts) then when you modify the cocking piece to get rid of cock on close you'll have .240 to .250 of pinfall and excellent ignition. All my rifles have just a few .001's of cock on close to make sure the sear is picked up when cycling the bolt without opening it.

Jerry I was talking right out of the box new with factory bolts. All say the receivers are pretty dam true compared to the old ones I’ve done but extraction is nonexistent in the ones I’ve done. They all need a trip to Dan.

I mean, it is fine, but it DID increase the cock on close over a stock bolt. It extracts like crazy, but you can literally watch the thing cocking.

I was simply saying that one thing can lead to another.

This one has not been modified to fix the cock on close yet. Elisio modified the cock on close on the stock action in my tube gun. The primary extraction was already fine.

And I agree, these action trueings can make the problem worse.

These days I am like leave the thing stock. If you want to lap the lugs a bit that is fine I guess. I have actions both ways, and I have not seen that my stock actions won't shoot darn good. I am starting to think that the best thing to do is take the SS actions from Buds and leave them alone ($340), or buy a Bat ($1200). I mean it really is about whether most people would ever notice. Competition people are obsessed with enough is never enough.
