savage quality control?????NOT!

a friend purchased a new savage .223 1-9 twist laminated thumbhole accutriger rifle and asked me to check it out. i have NEVER felt a rougher bore!!! there were snags, burrs, gouges, etc every inch while pushing a patch thru. once the crud was cleaned, i even tried some j-b bore paste in hopes it was some type of particulate matter that would come out and leave a nice smooth bore. NO WAY! i feared i would see what i saw thru a borescope...CARNAGE inside the chamber and bore ,end to end! there were dents in the lands and grooves, pieces of steel sticking into the bore with threads of cleaning patch still stuck! oblique dents across lands, rounded edges of the lands at varying distances...one couldn't do this on purpose. to fire such a pos could have resulted in a disaster since there was so much metal sticking into the bore. needless to say this "salvage" is on it's way back to the "quality control inspector" for replacement. i was under the impression that savage was replacing the quality that remingtom once had. how many have seen anything like this?
if i can see you, i can touch you.BANG! (not with this pos)

One of my two 12F Savages, a 6.5-284, had a bore that looked like they used a rat-tail rasp as a bore reamer. It shot poorly and coppered viciously. The other, a 6BR, looked pretty decent for a factory barrel, shot well and cleans as well as can be expected. YMMV

have 2 lrpv's.. had the 22-250 at a gun smith for some work..he looked at the bore & said " it was one of the worst looking barrels that he had ever seen "..w/ 52 gr amax & 748..it shoots bug holes at 100m..go figure.

My Savage 22-250 VLP "has" the ability to shoot great groups from time to time but, doesn't do it with great consistency. This barrel has always copper fouled really quick and is a PITA to clean. It takes four times as long to clean the factory Savage barrel vs. my McGowen barrel. Some times I would rather take a good ol fashioned beating than clean the barrel on my 22-250 ;)! I'd get over the beating a lot quicker!!!

My LRPV didn't copper foul.

It takes 5 wet patches then 5 brushes and 5 more wet patches to get it clean-ish. I don't have to shoot more then one fouling shot.

This is sad to hear as I have had 2 factory barrels and both were pretty good, however I replaced them anyways with shilens for now.We should forward this thread if it grows right to the president of the company since he cares so much about quality.I will bet it will stir the pot alittle.

I have an older Remington 700BDL, 100% factory all the way, chambered in 222 Remington, and as seen with my Hawkeye, the bore is downright ugly, but will consistantly hold around 1/2 moa 5 shot groups at 1 & 200 yds. I've fired as many as 60 rounds without cleaning and the group sizes actually get smaller as the barrel gets dirtier. On top of that, copper fouling is minimal and is easily cleaned out with a soaking of Butch's. As said, go figure. :)

I have a dual port PTA, I have never had a factory barrel on it.
The action it self is nice, but the accutrigger had to go in the trash. It would not keep a consistent setting. Also I could never get it to eject the 6br casing. I tried all sorts of fixes but in the end I just upgraded the trigger to aftermarket and removed the ejector. It wears a Mcgowen barrel in 6mmbr and shoots great. So in a way I love it, but also I hate it. If that makes any sense. :P

I have always figured you get what you pay for, and in most instances I absolutely believe that. I have a $200 Stevens in .308 it shoots exactly as I expected it too, a little under a " with a little load work, like ALL inexpensive factory barrels it doesn't clean very well I have a $300 Savage in 22-250 it's about the same, I pack @ least one rifle and a couple pistols in my vehicle
24/7/52 so I don't really care, I can kill coyote sized animals out to 300 yards or so with no problem and if some scumbag steals one of them they haven't even stolen the price of one decent custom barrel ;) You get what you pay for. I have a $1200 f-class Savage in 6.5*284, it shoots bug hole groups and cleans almost as easily as any of my customs, same story with my Savage 6br and a older 40x Remigton in .222, You get what you pay for! I absolutely agree that they shouldn't put out such garbage, I have had a factory gun or three that wouldn't shoot or clean well and then a few years back I built my first custom after I topped it with a fairly decent scope I had over $3k in it, I was shocked ??? When I started shooting it I was equally shocked at how well it shot ;D People nowadays think cheap, cheap, cheap!!! they love there wallmarts and blue light specials, they like to support the Chinese, so the gun makers have accommodated, there are multiple gun makers now making these plastic, stamped sheet metal, Chinese steal, gun lookalikes, they have put the beautiful model #70 out of business. I don't know what to tell you my friends, every once in a while you will get a cheapy that shoots well but day in and day out you are going to get what you pay for so if you buy a $200 stevens and your expectations are to shoot a mule deer at a respectable distance you will be happy :D but if you take it to a match or if bug hole groups are your thing,........WELL?
.......Enough said. Good shooting to all ;)
Wayne.
