savage model 12 benchrest stock

Hello,
I was wondering if any of you had tried to modify the toe on this stock so it would be parrallel with the forearm? I can not afford an after market stock for f class shooting and would like to have the toe and fore arm parrallel. Is this possible? Thanks for any info you can give me.

I sawed a piece of 1/2" PVC Sched 40 plumbing pipe to fit from the pistol grip bottom, to the toe, and screwed it on with countersunk wood screws on my F-Class. Sawcuts to fit the angles of the two spots of attachment, and grind a curve to fit the toe. Or if you can find a stainless tubing about 5/8-3/4" dia, it would be classier. Pretty is as pretty does, says Uncle Bubba.

I am looking at doing a similar modification to a savage FT/R stock. My plan is to take a piece of 1x1x6 in piece of oak and taper and prfile one side so that it matches the contour of the stock and screw and glue it to the toe sticking foreward so it makes a bag rider. I dont think you need to run all the way to the grip cap.

Just a thought but what about offering to trade stocks with another Savage owner who wants a benchrest stock?

I have used Moa's approach but using birch instead of oak. Birch is easier to work than oak. It was bedded to the stock but not glued. It was held with one screw. Bedding makes for a very snug fit so one screw was enough.

Thanks all for the replies, I think I will try using a piece of wood to create my own bag rider. Have to be cautious though as this stock has been drilled to add lead shot for extra weight in the back.

I saw a guy at the range who had a vertical metal plate with a horizontal bar welded to the bottom. The vertical plate was between the butplate and the stock and the horizontal bar was the bag rider. It didn't look homemade, so I assume you can buy them out there somewhere.

I tried that route and found that the length of pull was too long and I could not get to the scope comfortably.

You mean like this? To make the toe parrallel with the front of the stock and grip?

Yes, it can be done pretty easily. On this one, I cut the toe off parrallel with the bottom of the grip, then inletted a piece of 5/8" aluminum bar stock into the grip and screwed it down fore and aft with brass screws. Filled up the gap with PC-7 epoxy, rough sanded then finished with automotive filler. The barstock serves as a sanding guide to get the stock sanded into a smooth constant angle where the bags will ride, from base to grip notch. The base stock for this is a wood Savage stock. Did alot of other mods to it as well, including adding a wide fore-end.

Beautiful job! What kind of epoxy is pc 7? I never heard of that one. I do some woodworking as a hobby, cabinets and tables and stuff but never tried to do a gun stock. What model savage is the stock?

I was also wondering about railroading the fore end so I would have just two "tracks" on either side with a hollow in the center. Thought this might help it track better.

PC-7 is a 2 part epoxy sold at Ace Hardware. The display had a nickel and some screws stuck to a coke bottle, so I figured it would stick anything to anything. It's good for filling, makes into a thick paste, dries pretty quickly, relatively cheap, but makes a poor sanding surface. You'll have to finish off surface with auto body filler.

The stock started out as a standard BVSS stock. I laid the whole thing out on my work bench on some butcher paper, drew out the lines to get the surfaces parrallel, then made the cuts with a table saw. Slightly rounded fore-end - I epoxied on some wood dowels on the edges to get the width I wanted, then filled up the "gaps" with PC-7. The wood dowels made a decent sanding guide.

A hint, you can use the wax surface of butcher paper as a release surface - clamp the stock to the table, lay epoxy on the surface you want to glue and the epoxy will stick to the glue surface but not to the wax paper. Makes a nice even surface ans eliminates alot of sanding. You can also let it harden half way, oil up a pencil and roll it over teh surface to "nead" it into place. The hardest part to do was blending the wide surface of the fore-end to the stock in the middle - that took some trial and error with auto body filler.

I did the fore-end first, then cut/filled the toe of the toe of the stock, then reshaped the grip grooves with a dremel sanding wheel.

Railroading would be easy, just epoxy two strips of aluminum bar stock to the bottom of the stock......

I had a similar problem with my first long range BR build. I had a BVSS stock modified for a PTA and wanted the toe to be parallel to the fore end.
I got a piece of 3/8 square tube stock, drilled a hole on one side to clear the rear sling swivel screw and a hole through both sides for a screw to fasten it to the sling swivel screw. Drilled a 1/4" hole an inch and a half into the stock a few inches forward of the swivel screw and 90 deg to the barrel axis. put a 1/4" tube in the hole, drilled a 1/4" hole top to bottom of the square tubing to align with the tube, cut it off and welded the 1/4" tube to the sq tubing. Filed off rough edges and good to go!

Here is my attempt at converting my 12 BVSS stock to a benchrest style. I used the RemOil can to support the gun at the trigger guard so the entire 'project' could be seen. (Sorry for all the clutter in the background.) One screw where the sling stud was is all that is holding it in place.
I will be trying it out tomorrow at the Usery Mtn range. If it works as well as I'm hoping, I may get ambitious and try to copy Elkbane's masterpiece. I've never worked with body filler, so that part is a little scary.

Looks good. Looks like what I am planning on doing, except mine will be wood, and screwed and epoxied to the stock. Body filler is easy to work with but honestly I dont see the point for your design. Id keep it the way it is.
