Savage Info

Carolina Man said:
I am new to Savage Rifles and I need some info on them. I have a chance to buy form an estate a Savage Mod. 12 in 22-250, less than a 100 rds fired. Appears to be BVSS with an internal box mag. Has Accutrigger, 3 screws in a laminated stock.

Can someone tell me the pros & cons of these rifles compared say to a Rem. 700. I want to have this rifle rebarreled to a 6mmSLR, Is it worth fooling with.

Thanks
George
I have one. It makes a nice varmint rifle. Mine had serious binding issues that took a gunsmith's attention to reduce.

Mine now sports a 6 BR barrel.

Be aware that you can get the same barrel nut for a Remington from PacNor, Jim Briggs, maybe others. To get the bolt face versatility, you have to get a smith to convert the bolt.

I'm not down on Savages, but I am a big on spreading information.

carolina man if all your wanting is a varmint rifle it will work fine all the talk is about taking them down to oz.'s and that trigger wont go that low. for me i was on the fence about them until a few years ago when i got around to replacing the barrels myself and swapping triggers. i like the fact that i dont have to rely on a smith and thier jacked up prices i also like the fact that i can swap barrels at will i liked it so much that i sold every remington i had and now have 4 savages with the red blade trigger(2) 1 set @ a nice 10 oz. and the other set at 14 oz. does the 10 trip the sear if you work the bolt to hard yes it does i use it for a training rifle to teach my wife to shoot ftr. i also have a rifle basics set at 6 oz. you can slam it bang it (match director did it at a match to check for safety) and it does not go off until you squeeze the trigger. i had it down to 4 oz. but didnt like it that low will it fail yes at some point every trigger will fail. i also have the old style trigger i replaced the spring out to a softer one its a hunting rifle so it wont go really low.
i also like the fact that i can look in the trader paper and pawn shops and get a donor rifle cheap .

SSS makes the evolution trigger for benchrest etc and yes it goes down to ounces and from what I have read, they work well.

I have two both go to 3 oz or less. They look and adjust like my Jewells. When I hear about all the aftermarket triggers be junk and un safe I just consider the SOURCE. Larry

You have two what triggers that go to 3 oz or less? Stock Savage Accutrigger, PTA trigger, Rifle Basix Trigger, or SSS?

Regardless, color me dubious.

I was being ask about the Evolution trigger . They look like and adjust the same as my jewells. Yes SSS sold them Larry

So, the Evolution trigger in a SSS blueprinted action will function in the low ounces ? Why then, are they absent from short-range BENCHrest matches.......Registered and NOT Factory Class, Trued Remingtons with Jewels compete.
You would think in the ~400 Sanctioned Matches held annually, more people would bring a Blueprinted Savage action to see how they stack-up?

I can only speak for my self the only short rang best rest shoot is 500 miles away and then I don't think they shoot the class your talking about. Sorry I don't have a better answer. Larry

Unless I am missing something, wasn't Mr. Holland running a Savage trigger in this match? I have heard he is a wonderful guy.

The SSS trigger I have used still had the same issue as the factory. You have to close the bolt very carefully or it decocks. Seems un-safe and annoying, but they are the best option. I believe they are very pricey and you have to send the action in to have it fitted, but I may be wrong on that.

Alex, you are right. You have to send the action to them to install the trigger. They also time the trigger at the same time. The last one I sent to them cost $350.00 plus shipping both ways. Also took 7 months to get back. A big improvement but still not a Jewell. Eric

NOTE TO SELF:

Self, don't bother going varmint shooting with anything less than a 2 oz Jewell BR trigger, you won't be able to hit anything, and that all shooting is comparable to competition shooting, and you will have no joy from the experience unless you go whole hog.

Awesome how a question about a varmint rifle gets turned into a hater fest about competition rifles.

If Savages suck so bad why did Remmy copy them (barrel nut and trigger safety blade new Mod 783) when they have it all with what they have??

Note that I said "BENCH" rest ........where equipment is a larger part of the equation.

I dogged a Savage BVSS for 3000 rounds. Still would shoot .4 to .6 at 100 with 69 MK. Accutrigger can be lowered below #1 using supplied tool. To get much lower it is necessary to remove the irritating red piece of tin from the trigger. The setting will hold for +- 600 rounds. Then requires resetting. Good rifle for varmits and factory class competition at club level. Its a working mule not a race horse. LT

Because theres a market for it. Doesnt make it good or bad. This is an accuracy forum so most things will be compared to competition rifles. Theres lots of hunting or predator forums out there if this aint to your liking. I would love to see Savage change the trigger design so you could use something like a Jewell. It seems to be the biggest complaint. It would make it a much more competitive action.

They made that rifle to compete with entry/cheaper rifles out there, like the Savage. Look at the MSRP on it compared to the Remington 700.

Leupold has their rifleman series, Nikon has their Prostaff series, Nightforce has their SHV series, and so on.

I shoot a Savage in Palma and Long Range match rifle. I do ok with it. It is wearing a Krieger 12 twist tight bore and sitting in a MasterClass prone stock.
I wore out an accutrigger to where it became extremely inconsistent until raised above 1.5lbs.
On advice from the internet I bought a Sav-2. What a miserable pile of crap that thing is. Great idea that was very poorly executed. Sloppy tolerances is the PC descriptive. Rifle Basix will not answer the phone nor will they respond to an email. I am now looking for a take off accutrigger.
The weakness of the Savage is that stamped piece-o-sheet metal thing they call a sear.
Move the firing pin release to the bottom of the bolt where it belongs and all would be right with the world.
To the original OP. $700 seems a bit high for what it is. $600 would be more palatable.

The forum is called "Accurate Shooter"! ???

I see the site now has 25,000 members . Yes the site is called Accurate shooter. Not Competition shooter. Why not have a Forum just for Competition shooters? Larry
