Savage Barrel Nut & Action Wrench

get a receiver tool much easier and a double ended wrench or get the six sided square nuts and use a wrench or Crecent wrench I have the the tools from Northland shooters supply but I went to the hex nut and the arbor type wrench that goes into the receiver, faster and less setup, if this makes any sense I'm kinda off out there

Yes, confused. I will be doing my own work, but I don't plan on swapping too many barrels, so I'm not wanting to spend a lot of money.

Contact James at Northland Shooters Supply and order their action wrench designed for Savage actions. They provide instructions with the wrench and are available by phone to answer questions.

They also sell a wrench for removal of the barrel nut which can be used with a torque wrench to install the new barrel and barrel nut. Tap the wrench gently with a rubber mallet to loosen the old barrel nut. This method seems to loosen the nut without undue stress on the action.

Barrel nut wrench from Sharp Shooter Supply or anybody that sells that style. Pass on the action wrench if you're only plan is to "one or two".
Used my Wheeler Action wrench one time. It distorted the SS action enough that I had to back it off to be able to spin the barrel. Under the bench, in the box collecting dust. NEVER AGAIN!!
Nut wrench slid up the barrel in a padded jaw vice. Steel hammer to SMACK the nut wrench. First time coming loose CAN BE a booger!!!
I must have changes close to a dozen barrels that way with NO issues. Even swapped a few at the range.
SMACK the wrench with the steel hammer. The shock of STEEL on STEEL will break the nut loose. Same going back on. Check the headspace and when it's where YOU want it, Snug the nut and a softer SMACK to secure it.
I don't use gauges. All of my headspaces are set in the snug side. Factory ammo will NOT chamber. (I've tried) So, all my ammo is wildcat?? A bunch of different chamberings.

And a few I can't remember without looking.
All on a Savage action.
Keep it simple and enjoy what you're doing. :)

The rear entry tool and hex nut is a pretty simple setup much much easier faster, but I change out a lot of barrels on 6 rifles I just give them a good turn to tighten no torque have been using it for bout 12 yrs, but it's fun to do your own..having fun is the key...have fun and shoot small

Crecent wrench
No. Bad choice. Plumbing job maybe. If I didn’t have the right size. ( unlikely)
Not only is it a guarantee poor fit, most folks pull with it on backwards.
But then again, besides one other member, I have wrenches most people have never even seen.

Pulling on a nut wrench will cause problems
Sure will. Can’t think of a better way to break a bolt, or if using a garbage wrench you’ll round the nut off.
There’s only a few people on this site that would ever pay the price a good tool costs.
Those that haven’t bought a quality tool,
I sure made lots of money over the years thanks to them.
