Savage and Remage

I have quite a few Savage rifles all different configurations ect, been thinking of a new build, this time with a remington action and the Nut as like the savage uses, only reason is because of stock availability, so if i go that route am i missing anything that i may run into. any pros and cons of the remington action using the nut

Barrel channel as mentioned above. The only other "drawback" I'm aware of is the Remington bolt head firing pin hole may need bushed, especially if going to small primer brass running higher pressure loads.

Is the only way I will ever build another center fire, don't let the naysayers let you believe they wont shoot , its all about ammo then, jeff hankins even makes one you can shoot 65 grains of IMR 4198 out of

So I've had a remage barrel on order from Northland Shooters Supply since November and it should be shipping this week or next. Note, this isn't their normal lead time, but Criterion just started offering a 1:7" twist in 6mm and I'm getting one of the first ones. That said, you may need to have the recoil lug pinned, use a different recoil lug than the factory original, and/or you may need an action wrench with a cutout for the recoil lug alignment. I already had a barrel vise, Savage wrench, and a Mauser action wrench, so when I ordered my barrel from NSS I ordered their action wrench that aligns the recoil lug.

I wanted to do the remage barrel partly because I'm hoping to burn up this 243 Win barrel in short order, that is I hope to get to shoot it a lot and if I wear it out I want to easily be able to replace it. A friend of mine just did a Criterion remage in 308 and has been getting about .5 MOA with his handloads that are only basically tuned. I think good accuracy can be achieved, but I also think it depends on what your definition of accuracy is. I'm pretty happy with 3/4 MOA, and if I can get 1/2 MOA I am absolutely tickled. I'm not sure if remage is the way to go if you're a benchrest shooter looking to get down in the 1's and 2's; they might be that good, but I'm not certain.

Can't wait for my barrel to come in!!

I put one together a few years ago, a CBI 24" 260 match. Had some action work done and the lug pinned. Accuracy is good, barrel broke in at about 100 rnds, all within my expectations. The only real drawback as the others have mentioned is the need to relieve the stock to acomodate the barrel nut but that's the game with a Remage.

dont forget with the remington you have a selection of excellent triggers you dont have with the savage. ( jewel-bix and andy ect)

It seems like there are also fewer inletting variations of stocks and magazines for Remington actions.

thats for sure there are the long and short action in remingtons that have been that way always and savage has changed alot over the years when it comes to stock fitting

Too many custom actions out there that will use either Savage pre fits or Remage barrels, also enough stocks for either one. Stay away from those Remington actions.

All of my Remingtons are now nut barreled rifles. I have Remage barrels from Rock Creek and Criterion. Waiting on my Bartlein to arrive. My Rock Creek 6br SMOKED my Krieger shoulder barrel. As to one shooting better than another I can assure you the nut makes absolutely no difference.

The nut is the future. And I find the obsessing over the looks just downright strange.

Also, quick tip. When you install the barrel use a bit of red Loctite on the nut threads. After it sets up, you have essentially a a shoulder barrel for that action and you never have to use the nut wrench again to switch the barrel.

I assume that you leave that nut permanently on that barrel. New nut for each barrel? jd

The only benefit I see to this is buying prefit barrels. If you have your own reamer (I do) or use your smiths reamers a barrel vise is about $50 and you can switch barrels all day long and not worry about head spacing.

I've got one Savage, and I've got 4 other actions (2Rem, Defiance, Panda) that have 2 to 4 barrels each that I swap as I desire. Two of those actions have multiple chamberings (one 223/208 one 6SLR/308). Never touch a headspace gauge to change them; spin one off, spin another on. It take slightly longer than taking off the scope caps.

In the case of my 308s all the barrels chambered with the same reamer can use the same brass. One more thing that makes life easier.

Once you Loctitie the nut, it is the same. I am REALLY surprised no one has made a nut with a JAMB nut. IT seems like an obvious thing to me. Until then I just use Loctite. I can change barrels in about a minute or two.
