Savage Accuracy

So I have been shooting my Savage M12 LRPV in 204ruger for a while now. I'm starting to get my loads dialed in.

Last night my girlfriend (siiri) and I went shooting at 300 yards. She was load testing her 6BR and I was shooting a proven load in my 204.

Her M12 benchrest in 6BR is shooting a little under 1MOA at 300. Not to bad for little to no load testing so far.

On to what I'm excited about. I had 11 shots left. I did a 3 shot group and it turned out to be TINY! So I kept shooting my group until I was out of ammo.

Here my 11 shot group at 300 yards.

I'm not 100% sure what caused the flyers but its a awesome group none the less.

Jason,
I don't know if I would call them flyers, all eleven came in just over 1/2 min and eight of them were under 1/4 min I say that is a GREAT shooting factory Savage, I know customs that would not hold that accuracy for 11 rounds, Great shooting ;)
Wayne.

Just the standard for a Savage gun any day of the week, that why I have built 3 of them!
It will do the same at 400/500/600yds & more.

James... don't change anything... your load development is complete!
I'm not 100% convinced that its complete. That load was my old load in new brass. I think after a little tweaking or maybe just refining my loading techniques I will be able to shrink my groups a little more. Possibly get rid of the flyers. You never know!

Jason, ;D

Youy can waste a lot of time and money chasing that last little bit of accuracy. While it is cheap to shoot the 204, I bet you could work load development for a long time. I would think based on what you have shown us here, you could load up a bunch of that same load and shoot it to the same level of accuracy.

There comes a time when good is good enough.

Sean

those 3 shots are not fliers... that was slight wind shift.
You have approx .75" ~ 1.0" of vertical... that's very good, especially for a factory barrel.
I'm not saying to stop experimenting, but I'd hate to see you burn your barrel up trying to get it to group better than that.

I shoot groups like that at 300yds with my 1K yard bench gun. Being honest, my groups are usually a bit bigger than that. I would say I agg about 1.5" ~ 2.0" at 300 yards with my current load... I typically have about 1/2" of vertical, and a bunch windage (I'm still struggling with reading wind).

Walt,
Ain't that the truth, I struggle every day with reading the wind.
James, I agree with Walt and Sean, there not flyers and it isn't often you get any barrel especially a factory barrel that shoots that well, enjoy it and use it's exceptional accuracy to help teach you how to read the wind.
DuhWayne.

Finally, someone who understates the size of a group! Good shooting. Wind flags will tell you what is moving your bullets, but enough about that, take it to the field, yer done.

WOW that rifle is a super shooter and thats a fine job you did behind the trigger. I hear and see so many good things about the savage rifles. Makes me wonder why i build these $$$$$$$$$$ rifles when you see so many of them shooting so well out the box or with some minor tuning. I will have to take the plunge and get 1 some day and see what i have been missing. Great shooting James.

Thank you.

I have been happy with all my Savage rifles. Sure maybe the barrels aren’t the most smooth in the world and they take a little longer to clean then some other match grade barrels but they seem to shoot.

I have not done a thing to my rifle other then bolt on a budget Vortex scope. I think Savage and Vortex go hand in hand.

Looks like Minute of crow to me. iv had my eye on a the 204 for a while now…… very nice 300 yard group. happy days.

my savage shot a three shot group of .48 and a group of .955 at 262 yards. also a group of 3 inches on friday at 770 yards. maybe i could get it more accurate but i'll probably work on trying to get my ballistic app to match up with what ever dist i'm shooting. i was bout 1/2 an moa high at 770. going to try to get a 18x18" steel gong built to place on a distant hill and then i'll really have fun. shooting at the same dist and just spending hour after hour at the reloading bench isn't very fun to me. i want to shoot one shot someday at a ground hog very far and drop it. maybe someday the same for a bigger varmint out west. then i'll be ready for the revolution. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D. there's just something bout taking a range reading at a dist you never shot at before and doing some wind reading and firing a shot and conecting. 1/2 moa accuracy and 12 or so standard deviation or less is fine for that type of shooting i think. i got a model 12 f/tr chambered in 7mm rem mag with a leupold 45x45 comp scope. harris bi pod. protecktor rear bag. win brass. 162 a-maxes, fed primers. 2990 fps. 65.6 grains of reloader 25. how far will i be able to go on a 18" gong especially with very little wind??????? i'd say pretty far.
