Ruger buys Anderson Manufacturing and closed it

I believe you are crediting Remington for
Cerberus Capital Management's contribution...... Things never go well when a private-equity firm is involved.......

That's a very interesting story you linked to. It largely mirrors my own observations and fills in some blank spots I didn't know about.

My first "real rifle" was one of the tang safety M77's in 1974 -- and it happened to be a real shooter. I've never had an off the rack rifle that was better. AND I've also never had any other brand of rifle that carries, handles, balances, and fits as well as those M77's. And that has a lot to do with how a guy shoots a hunting gun. Now that aspect of a rifle is a personal and subjective thing, and I know a lot of guys won't feel that way about them. I've shot a pile of deer and elk with that 243, and another in 270 over the years, but I don't have any of the Rugers newer than 70's vintage. jd

Would you have bought an M1 Carbine or maybe an SKS and expected a high degree of accuracy from it???

A Mini 14 is basically an M1 Carbine with more power.

Instead of blaming the Mini 14 for doing what it was designed to do, maybe you should have bought some sort of bolt action.

M1 carbines were made to replace the 1911 for support people. Because of their accuracy I never wanted one. I surely would not want one in a combat or self defense situation. So the Mini was designed to shoot a group the size of a mexican sombrero? It was definitely a spray and pray gun. Never cared for an SKS either.

I’m not blaming, I’m stating the facts of my experience. Maybe I wanted to try a reasonably accurate semi auto. How was I to know it was designed to shoot like junk? AR’s can be handy and capable of sub MOA. My bolt 22lr Ruger and .243 were not great either.

I saw a video of Ruger’s process for making M77 actions and they had a guy straightening actions in a jig.

The only thing they ever made that was great was their over and under shotgun. I buy according to my wants, needs, and expectations. Ruger builds stuff that is acceptable to most and I guess I don’t fit that crowd.

I think this is the one I got, back when they were like 389.95. Three of my buddies have since got them, so I guess I hang out with a bunch of cheapskates.

It looks like Buds is showing more "Out of Stock" Anderson stuff, so if ya wanna get one of the soon to be rare and desirable Anderson originals ya better not hesitate. :) jd

Not a fanboy of Ruger, but get a lot of use out of them. A ar-556 MPR has been very accurate and is a pig’s nightmare. LCR, GP-100, and SR9’s all have preformed well.

Amazing on how, in some posts, people bash Rugers but praise Sh*t and Wesson and others. They praise a brand on how accurate they are and farther into the post you find out that it has a custom Krieger or Brux barrel etc. Remington actions come to mind. Speaking of them, there 308 police sniper rifle was crap in accuracy. Sh*t and Wesson quality went into the toilet when Dirty Harry was released and stayed there for decades. Over the past half century I owned close to 400 firearms. Ruger has always been the most reliable of all the firearms. True the accuracy hasn't always been the best but I don't recall them ever claiming a match grade rifle. All this because Ruger limited the sale high capacity magazines to appease the anti gunners - which I didn't like either but he still made reliable guns. I have numerous other horror stories with other companies including Leupold which I will NEVER own again. Quality took a dip when Bill left, but that its expected anytime a founder is out of the picture.

Had a couple of the tang safety 77's, they had some faults , like after being closed over a full mag and not picking up the round. Haven't bought anything other than #1's in Ruger since then.
Sounds like in this case they saw some decent tooling and people they needed, weren't interested in the products they had been making. Lots of here for a while and gone gun companies around, nothing new there. A lot of them are just machine shops who's owner happened to be interested in guns for a while.
