Ruger 10/22 barrel

What is the shortest barrel that I can put on my Ruger 10/22 and still achieve good groups at 50 and 100 yards. I am going to use it for squirrel hunting. I don't want a long barrel that will get cote on every thing in the woods.

Well you can't cut it too short or it will be considered a pistol, you can get in big trouble for having a pistol barrel on a registered rifle action. I think the limit is around 15 inches, correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think it will affect your accuracy, but your velocity will be lower. Have you seen those new Ruger 10/22 Pistols, kewl.

I would just go 16-18" for any 22. I've got a 18" on my 17Mach2 and its perfect.

i think a rifle has to be 16 or 16.5 and a pistol no longer than 15 my encore stock says on but plate not for use on barrel shorter than 16.5 if i am not mistaken

For optimum speed. 16 inches. Your best accuracy will be with the bullet under supersonic speed.

Do as much research as you can about Bill Calfee.

It's 16 inches any shorter and you have to take the stock off and put a pistol grip on it as it is illegal as a rifle but it would be legal as a pistol. How you can register it as a pistol is beyond me since it was originally manufactured as a rifle, it may still be an illegal gun I don't know.

But to answer your question, I purchased the 22 inch rifle in stainless and changed the stock to a synthetic dragonoff model. That dropped the weight and made it much more manageable and fun to shoot. Excellent accuracy at 100 yards in light wind. I think you might want the reach of the longer barrel. But I don't know of many people that squirrel hunt at 100 yards.

The new Ruger 10/22 pistol looks really cool, but have no experience with it.

The barrel may be no shorter than 16" to be legal. Thankfully this barrel length makes a really handy rifle. Concerning barrel length and accuracy - the barrel length does not make the accuracy, the quality of the barrel does.

Look at Green Mountain barrels as they are very good barrels., http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/ )

BTW, it is illegal to make a pistol out of a rifle.
