Rimfire- Accuracy

Sadly, that stopped when I quit drinking.

And I wasn't going to mention this because there is an ongoing investigation up here but Santa disappeared from radar for an hour this past Christmas Eve when he was traversing Nebraska. I knew the likely suspect and supplied authorities with satellite images of a very suspiciously configured farm machine shed.
Nuff said.
You can tell the Canadian Secret Police I’m innocent of all charges and Santa wasn’t here last year because I was too naughty!

I’m turning over a new leaf this year and attempting to be a good little boy because I need another pallet of ammo or a new rifle.

Just in case he doesn’t get my letter, would you kindly pass-on the info below so he can navigate here without getting lost.

Obviously indoor storage for pre assembled irrigation pipe.

I will say this
Ok you have a rifle that shoots very tight groups with quality ammo--lot selected etc My rifle will shoot so and so size tiny groups--That is well and good BUT when you start moving that rifle after every shot and cover say..an ARA target of 25 bulls--well then...you have a different deal--it may easily spread that magic group out to well over 1/2 inch or even larger because you are doing another set up for every single shot--That is the part that is hard to do--get all 25 of them the same--That is the hard part

Do you get to take sighters between bulls?

Above is Landy's most recent ARA Unlimited 2500. My own most recent F Class result is below. My point in posting is not to wind up Landy further yet (but I'm ok with that) but to point to the fact that my result is only just over 50 percent bigger (Mean Radius and SD Radius). In regards to the original intent of this thread I am constantly amazed by how difficult it is to make small gains in accuracy. My set up is bipod and rear bag off the snow right at freezing. I am shooting a Vudoo repeater with a 22inch cut rifled barrel. Ammo is SK Standard Plus bought blind. Think of all the steps an ARA competitor has to take to tighten things up by 50 percent.

I have nothing but respect for those of you shooting ARA Unlimited, it is a game of thousandths of an inch where every bit of juice has to be squeezed out of every aspect of equipment, ammo, skill and judgement. Not to mention travel and shooting at different ranges.

Yes you can always pause and shoot a sighter then go back to score
If you shoot from a mechanical rest like many or most do it helps a TON but think of a guy on a bipod and rear bag--That is how we shoot Factory class--( I think it would be great if that were the rule but..)
Takes more shooter skill if you ask me

22 bench rest competition is one of the toughest games there is

Maybe this will help you understand Sir,

My accuracy expectation.......1/2 MOA is approximately 1/4" at 50 yrds. and this would be for 25 shots also. Center to Center of course.

My game.......ARA Unlimited which is shot at 50 yds.
I also shoot ARA unlimited and have been working on tuning my rifle…would you consider this a tuned rifle at 50 yards, or should I still be working towards getting it smaller?

Hi Ken,

As good a guess as any.

I was the talk-of-the-town in our very small community when I began construction, and for a month or so I wouldn't tell anyone WTH I was building. It sure made for some pretty bizarre/humorous guesses before I finally decided to tell everyone the truth. LOL

Unless you are a beginner it is a major achievement to raise your yearly agg by 50 points. That is equivalent to raising one shot per target from a 50 to a hundred, a matter of one or two thousands of an inch.

Thanks for the interesting comparison, but as I’m sure you know, it’s probably not fair to you.

My target is one of the best I’ve ever shot and that includes in my tunnel. That same combination (Action, Barrel, Stock, Optics, and Ammo) tested in my tunnel over 10 targets didn’t match it and I only had a couple of other 2500’s.

This is one of those rare instances where I simply got lucky and the rifle shot to the good side of the Bell Curve (Gaussian Distribution). The fact I shot it outdoors in the wind to boot and kept the distribution very well centered, also involved more that a little luck.

I’m pleased you were astute enough to use Statistical Metrics (Mean Radius and SD Radius) that are far superior to ES and not sensitive to the number of shots in a group.

Not wound-up,
Landy

Being a statistical nerd means I can’t answer your question because a single group is nearly meaningless.

However, that’s a very good group and if you could repeat it a great many times and average the same….you would have a very competitive rifle that would average approximately 2400 +/-50 if you keep the distribution of shots perfectly centered.
See below for my approximate measurement.

If you do additional testing and get that average, send me a PM and I’ll offer you a great price to buy it.

Thank you for the reply, I have just purchased this rifle new in November…working on getting it “fine” tuned…so I am taking your reply as it’s a good tune but not great…will keep at it…may need a click or 3 either way to tighten the group up…was hoping someone could give me a number to strive for CTC.

Also, I went back through my records and from March 26, 2024 thru September 19, 2024 all my shooting with Eley Benchrest Precision ammo averaged .430". As it got colder it went into the .5xx" through February 24, 2025. I believe (hope) it is the effect of temperature on the shooter (me) and, as it warms up my groups will shrink into the .4xx" again. I used to shoot better when I was younger, but then again I used to do everything better then...

I think most of us did better when we were younger, or at least the story gets told that way.
