My buddy wants a rifle for this. Will be used in the field. Suggestions from some of you that have done this project will be appreciated.
Thanks

that doesnt narrow it down much to help... anything will shoot 1000 yards... what exactly is it going to be used for? How much recoil do you want, terrain, lots of variables that sway my decisions...

Bill,
What kind of expense are we talking? Across the counter rifle or custom build...competition grade or recreational shooting? And finally the age of your friend because of the kick factor. Not sure he wants a .300 Win Mag if he's frail and aging, unless he'll willing to pay for a suppressor which is a possibility.

Custom and he has a suppressor license. Wants 1000-2000 yd potential. He has $10k for rifle and scope, something most of us could only dream about. Wants to master the long rang shot and has the land for a range to practice. Not into competition. Only casual hunting.

Defiance Deviant Long Action WITH a standard 308 and Mag Bolt
Jewell Trigger
Bartlein or Krieger Barrel
Badger FTE or Harrell's Tactical Brake blended to barrel
Schmidt and Bender, NF ATACR in FFP, NF Beast, or Vortex Razor Gen II
Manners Carbon Fiber Elite Tactical Folding Stock with a Soft EEz buttpad

Maybe do two caliber switchbarrel? I would do a shorter range and a long range caliber like the 7 RSAUM and 338 Edge or a 6.5 caliber like a 6.5x55 or 6.5x284 and the 338 Edge, 300 RUM or 338 RUM. The 308 and magbolt face gives him lots of options later if he gets tired of a particular caliber.

He could also get a Lapua Mag bolt and go with any of the calibers that work with that bolt

Or....

DTA HTI
Schmidt and Bender, NF ATACR in FFP, NF Beast, or Vortex Razor Gen II
Buy 2-3 switchbarrels in the caliber of his choice.

Long range and extreme long range is two different animals... If you want to really play extreme range like past a mile... id go 375 cheytac... and custom build it... 338 lapua can do some long work as well.

338 lapua improved is another..

But the plan is extreme 1500 to 3500 yrd shots the 375 is the king of long shooting.

If he really isnt going to strech it out past 1000 or 1400 id do a .284, 7saum, 7wsm

My choice is the 300 Winchester Magnum with 230 gr. Bergers in a 10 twist barrel. 2900-ish fps should stay supersonic to 1900 yds, according to Shooter Ballistic. The big 230s are awesome bullets. My rifle hammers with Retumbo out to 900 so far, but that is the longest yardage I have been able to shoot it to date. I have no reason to expect it to do any less at the extreme end of its trajectory.

The 300 WM is easy to tune and a helluva lot less expensive to shoot than the big uber-loudenboomer magnums.

But, opinions vary and I'm sure I'll get flamed for suggesting a 60+ years old cartridge but what the heck... :) Flame away!!

If you are talking about 1000 yards plus you can't go wrong with a 338 Lapua. Factory ammo, although expensive is readily available. Also the reloading for the 338 Lapua is pretty straight forward. You can get plenty of performance without using super hot loads. I have previously owned a Sako TRG 42. The gun was a good shooter but muzzle blast and recoil was definitely an issue. I originally wanted an Accuracy International 338 Lapua, but because of price and availability I settled for the TRG 42. I eventually sold the gun because I just did not enjoy shooting it.
A few weeks ago I purchased a Accuracy International AX338. I loaded up some 300 SMKS in Lapua brass N170 powder and Federal magnum match primers. My load development consisted of taking a middle of the road book load and making sure the loads fit the magazine. I did not get a chance to shoot it at an extended range, but the potential for real good accuracy was immediately apparent. What impressed me the most was lack of recoil and muzzle blast, marginally more than a 308. My two shooting buddies, who fired both rifles could not believe the difference in shootability between the TRG 42 and the AX338. With a budget of $10,000 your friend could set himself up the Accuracy International AX338, a proven performer and a top end optic. Thanks, Ray

contact GunWerks their hunting rifles are good to go for 1000 yds out of the box with Night Force scopes. Talk to Aaron or Mike Davidson.

If it was me I'd do a standard or improved 300 Norma on a Defiance action with a Bartlien or Krieger barrel. For 10k I could build and scope 3 rifles without getting stupid with scopes or 2 using high end glass. I do my own work though.

230 Bergers at 2950fps (standard 300 Norma) plus it holds its own well against the 338's with a lot less recoil. 31lbs of recoil in a 13lb rifle versus 45lbs for a 338 shooting 300's 2975fps. That is a comparison of my 30-338 Norma Imp shooting 230's @ 3045fps with 91grs of R-33 versus my Edge shooting 300's at 2975fps with 99grs of R-33. At 1800yds the 30 is down 70fps and drifts 19" (1 MOA) more in a 10mph wind. My 30-338 Norma Imp is one of the most accurate magnums I've owned and I've owned 50+ custom barreled magnum rifles. It's not uncommon to have it shoot 5 in the .2's or better at 100yds and easily under 1" @ 300yds.

I have a friend that just purchased a custom 338-378 weatherby built by Borden Rifles on a Borden action. He bought it from a gun store and who ever had it built never fired it. Brass, dies inculded. He has it for sale if interested.

Oh man....I LOVE spending other peoples money!!! ;D

I would get a BAT action of some sort with a 30 or 40 moa picatinny rail. I guess I am a huge BAT fan......pick your own poison.
3 bolts.... standard, magnum, and Lapua or Chytec
Calibers...
std-------6-47L

magnum......7mm STW or 7-300wby

Lupua or Cytec.........go big or go home. Minamum of 338 Lapua imp right on up to a 375 of some sort...again, pick your poison.

I would go with a ATCAR..pick your own reticle. I am not a FFP kind of guy.

Find the stock you like, and have it weighted up as much as you can. A heavy gun with a good break/suppressor makes for a very happy shooter.

I would think that you would have a big chunk of cash left over. if it were me, I would dump that into a TOP END rangefinder. Vectronix comes to mind!!! Nothing works without knowing the range!!

Have fun,
Tod

There have been some good suggestions. You stated your buddy will like to practice, that will bring barrel life into play. Also for use in the field, that will bring rifle weight into play involving recoil.A 300 norma has great ballistics better yet the improved version with the 230 berger. But the issue with that is setting everything up for one bullet that the barrel may or may not like.I like the option to try different bullets for that purpose which is offered in various 338 cartridges. The bat action is a good recommendation along with the vectronix. Many good scopes out there, pick a smith that fools with these type cases. For the balls out scenario a 338 snipetec gives crazy numbers also. All of these cartridges are going to have some kind of compromise and to play is expensive, plus being overshadowed by making 2k shots a crap shoot.I apologize if I have made any sense, not my normal method of operation !

If you are going LONG, get there by going BIG.

50BMG Target Rifles are my choice, one as AR-50, other as State Arms Shorty, both have been heavily modified with 34" bull Feddersen barrels.

AR-50 with very specially built reloads will produce 3155 fps with a 800 grain solid brass bore-rider projectile. Projectiles are Tungsten DiSulfide coated for lubricity and speed. Generates over 17,000 ft/lbs energy and stays supersonic to extended ranges. Cannot specify loading as any characteristic change will create explosive results and injury.

And actually less expensive to shoot than other better known sub-calibers.

McM stock with sniper fill throated to seat the 230 HyBreds way out there and push them with RL33 in a 300RUM. Put that " Quiet Can " on the end and put the ATACR on top with 120min of elevation in the scope you will be OK with a 20min rail. CG-22 Extreme trigger that is wonderfully adjustable 2 stage, 1 stage whatever and a quality 30" barrel of choice... 8).........That was fun ... ;)

In the last year or so, been doing some research on a big boomer. A shooting pard of mine has two .338Lapuas, a Remedy and an AI-AW, and I wanted something that would hang with those beasts. Thought about a .338NormaMag, but the allure of wildcatting something grabbed at me, as usual. Talked to my 'smith, and he happened to have a reamer on hand that might work. And that's where things accelerated downhill, LOL...

Parts are @ my smith now, waiting in line to build a 30-338Norma Imp 30°. He'd built a 'hunting weight' rifle with that reamer and was getting ~3250 with 215Hybrids from a 26" barrel. Goin' the other direction regarding platform, want mine to be a fat pig:

Defiance Deviant Tactical w/.750" bolt & 30moa integral rail
Bartlein 1:10tw, MTU contour @ 28"
APA Fat Bastard Gen II brake
Stock on order is a Micky A3 adj, w/heavy sniper fill
Defiance DBM & AI .338Lapua (non CIP) mag

'Smith is reaming out a Forster .300Norma seater to accomdate the .338Norma parent case. For sizing chores, sent Whidden a reamer print, and already have a custom FL bushing die in hand. Fast service!
My 7WSM and 6.5SAUM both have plenty of juice left@ 1K, but this big .30cal will be quite a step up in true LR performance. Should be fun!!!

what is a "suppressor license"???
you mean he has his 02/07 FFL/SOT?

if not....there's not such thing as a suppressor license.........it's just a $200 tax stamp and a small wait...
