LR Hunting Cartridge suggestions

will it work? Sure will. A good bullet will normally expand and do what it should. The real question becomes why when something bigger does it better? Confidence plays a big role when shooting long range I personally feel better with almost 2,000 ft lbs at 1k. That is where the 338 shines.

:-[At 800 yards, a 105 VLD has around 1000 ft lbs when cranked from something like a 6-284 or 6-06. Regardless of ft lbs, it comes down to terminal performance of the bullet. When the velocity gets down at these ranges, most bullets do little more than poke holes ( no expansion). I have seen the 105 all mangled up from steel at 1000 yards fired at only 2800 from my BR. Ive watched plenty of videoed long range hunts where the animal never even appeared to be hit when shot with BIG magnums only to be buckled by something smaller in the 7mm range. It's just my opinion, although many animals are killed every year by poor performing bullets...

Dan

Stop watching those videos, I've watched more than a couple dozed get hit through the reticle of my M-4 mounted to my 338 Norma. I know when I get a good hit the report lets you know and the damage is devastating.

I could do this all day. Here's another great choice but the 6mm version would be superior ;)

This says nothing as to the bullet performance on game animals.

That's awesome a spine shot elk which at least folded and a pulled shot far back also shocking the spine and folding only the rear legs on the goat, now that tells a lot about bullet and cartridge performance ??? If that was my hunt I'd burn the video.

Look guys, I'm not arguing against you ;). I'm just making a point. A bad shot with a 50 bmg is no better than a bad shot with a 243.
Bob Beck has probably killed more animals beyond 1000 yards than anyone else and he doesn't need a 338LM or 416 etc, etc. With the right bullet like a thin jacketed VLD at a good speed, you can safely take game at distance with a smaller bore. Plenty of great cartridges out there. We're all gun people here.

A pulled shot? 1380 yds... If he was 1 mph off wind call at the height of the bullet path he would have missed all together.. He put two rounds on the animal. That's great shooting.

Just calling what you posted a first shot crippler and a finishing shot, its all good but its someone else's video. If your going to give a guy good advise why not post your video and your experience?

Most 6mms are going to be transonic at 1000 or not much beyond it. Even if the transonic turbulence doesn't make you miss or make a wounding shot on the animal, it's going to have – what? – a whopping 300-400 ft-lb left at that range? And how well will the bullet expand at 1200 f/s?

I'll take a 22-250, thanks.

I shoot a 6 Dasher for 1000 yard BR and when in the pits the splash on the bank isn't hardly anything and that's with 105 VLD going 3050. If the ground is wet you easily can miss it. When the ground is wet and I shoot my 338 Lapua IMP and 300 grain Berger you would have to be blind not to see the impact. That 600yard shot in the video is about as far as I would push a 6mm on game. The difference in energy between 600 yard and 1000 is like day and night with a 6mm. Matt

If I were gonna go big and long range 338 Norma, other than that I love my 6.5WSM 140VLD's at 3180fps preforms pretty good at long range. There is nothing like that energy from a 338cal.

I really enjoy shooting 280 AI. This round is great on the shoulder and if you do your part can take down the largest in the North America. With a proper throated barrel and barrel length. A person can get the new Nosler LR 175 Accubonds to do 2900 fps.

Good luck in your quest
Brian

Looking forward to seeing your video.

Interesting replies lately Guys , btw , my buddy George and I may have Cam convinced that for our local situation, whilst the .338 will drop anything we will encounter , really is too much gun.
I think the .280 or .280AI is the perfect choice or perhaps the 7 Rem Mag.

Mike.

I would try the 25-06 you mentioned with 115 -120 grain bullets. You would have to put the right scope and base no matter what round you would chose, but a 25-06 would IMO take care of any goat and all lot of other critters. Barlow

In my neck of the woods, a single whole is all it takes for them varmints, no matter where it's placed.
