For a 24 year old head strong fella reading all the mall ninja stuff.. I suggest a 50 BMG. Because all the interweb so called "snipers" say that and the 338LM and 50BMG are what has to be used.

Sarcasim......

Im a 7mm fan and shoot a lot. way more important than the interweb folk lore. If I had a to buy five boxes of 338 bullets vs. 7mm I would shoot a lot less...

Just sayin.

The bigger 7's are not too shabby. I went shooting with a new owner of a fully custom 7mm Rem Mag and he was so happy hitting those swingers at 900yds. He was not as happy when he saw what happens when a 300gr bullet hit those swingers. The look on his face looked like buyers remorse to me.

I have no doubt about Cams ability to handle the .338's , he is 6'3" and around 230 and is not recoil shy , as for the 25/06 , that is his Dads rifle and like most of us , he wants his own rig & whilst I think the .280 or AI or 7 Rem Mag will be more than sufficient , I do think he has come under the spell of 'Hollywood Blockbusters.' But I think that economics will be the decider here , just securing a suitable rifle alone will tap out his wallet not to mention all the ancillary equipment.

Mike.

The truth coolhand is he needs to start shooting long range before he can say what he truly wants. This would be in the field shooting. All of us can only say what works for us. I have seen one friend who missed a 200yd shot with a 243 and one who missed a 230ish yd shot with a 30-06.

Personally I would suggest he start shooting at those longer distances he wants to play at. Then decide what he wants.

I went long range and hunting from semi concealed positions. It does not take a 18lb rifle to point and shoot deer out to 300yds.

I would stay away from any caliber under 270 with 150 grain bullet. I work with a deer outfitter in Saskatchewan Canada. We will not let any costomer hunt With any caliber under 270. I have shot lots of deer with 243 25-06 and smallesh 6.5s and to this day I still believe it's a little light for deer. I the past 5 years I have been involved in more than 500 deer kills and 50+ elk, moose kills . Please stay away from the light bullets please !!!!! I don't like tracking wounded animals from the use of the light guns . So please respect the animal and harvest it humanely. Not trying to be an ass just telling the truth.

How about learning to hunt?

Long range target practice on live animals is beneath contempt.

ANY type of target practice on game is contemptible but range has ZERO to do with it!!

Warren Dean way to add to this thread. Here is a definition for you.

"Hunt" or "hunting" means shooting, shooting at, pursuing, taking, attempting to take,
or killing any game animals and game birds; searching for or attempting to locate or
flush any game animals and game birds; luring, calling, or attempting to attract game
animals and game birds; hiding for the purpose of taking or attempting to take game
animals and game birds; and walking, crawling, or advancing toward wildlife while
possessing implements or equipment useful in the taking of game animals or game
birds. The term does not include possessing or using photographic equipment.

That is from the ND century code. So in ND it is hunting.

I say to each their own within reason. I try to shoot long range so I walk out well before first light and get into position. I sit in position or lay in position depending where I am hunting that day. Many have tried to tell me that is only a exercise in shooting. This comes from the guys who have not walked more than a few feet after shooting a deer from the pickup window.

What I take from your post is you can not do it so you think no one else should be allowed to do it. Please feel free to start a new thread and tell us about your most memorable spear kills since you know how to hunt?

this is the best article I've read about long range hunting . it explains it very well . I've noticed , when the talk turns to ethics , it always turns into a spittin contest . Jim

Opinions do vary. My opinion of you drastically changed with your PM to me. The one opinion of you that did not change is you can not do what I can. Nothing wrong with that at all just do not hinder my way as I will not yours. We are all firearms owners and we need to stick together.

I wonder if your state has a law like mine?
