Remy model 7 build

Guys, I just bought a nice older Remington model 7 action with the trigger to build a very lite varmint rig with to poke around in the woods here where i live. I was just wondering what all is different with it from the Remington 700. Never had 1 and thought it would be a good choice to build a very lite rifle with. Not sure on the cartridge yet but it will be a 22-250 or 243. Love those in the ackley and have had a few of each in the past on single shots. I will be using PTG bottom metal with it and using it as a repeater. How much trouble will their be feeding this thing if i went to an ackley improved. I don't have to but i just love those things. Do you guys think the model 7 will be fine for the lite weigth build. It will get the treatment as usual as far as truing and put a 1 piece base on it. Whats your opinions and experiance with this action on a build or stock from the factory. Thanks.......DAN

About the only difference is the length, it will make into a neat little lightweight rifle..

My hunting buddy has a model 7 predator in 243 and he complains about the action being too short for the 243 even with 58 vmaxes. I know he has had some feeding problems with it but I don't know if it caused by the shortness of the action or some other issues.

I would'nt think that the cutout would be different than the 700 but i could be wrong. In what part of the action makes it shorter? If it is a standard cut out i would think you would have some wiggle room to seat some bullets out some. Preacher, you work on rifles and i would like to here your opinion a little more on the action. I am leaning to the 22-250 do you see any problems.

Neither round should be an issue, they're both push feed so there shouldn't be a problem feeding an Ackley. Never met an Ackley that I didn't like. A friend has a #7 in 243 that I load for, no issues with round length or feeding.

Actually my Model 7 7mm SAUM cut out is a bit longer than a SA 700 receiver.
The cut out on the Model 7 is the same as the XR-100 and that handles the 22-250 just fine.. The old 600 Mohawk has the same opening as the 7 & XR-100's...

I have three Model Sevens. Two in a 223 and one in a 243.

The 243 is the stainless version with a 20 inch barrel. After I free floated the barrel it became one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned with a sporter weight barrel. It shoot 1/2 to 3/4 moa with handloads.

One of my 223's in the old version blued version with a 18.5 barrel. It shoots fine, about 1 moa but looses so much velocity it's difficult to hit small targets at 200 yards. I use it for Fall turkey where shot are normally under 150 yards in the mountains and it's fine for that purpose. I had to free float the barrel to get decent accuracy.

My other 223 is the never version, 20 inch stainless. After bedding and free floating the barrel I got it to shoot under 1 moa but not by much. I'm thinking of rebarreling with a Douglas 22 or 24 inch sporter barrel.

Bottom Line: The factory stock is junk. You may need to replace or bed / free float to get 1 moa and under accuracy even if you rebarrel. I like the Model Seven as a stalking rifle and have taken many of groundhogs with mine but no deer. It's a joy to carry and I think with some stock rework and effective handload you should be able to get it to shoot well.
