Model 7 rebarrel

OK, I have a model 7 Remington rifle I have retired it a 7/08 Rem. It served me well for many a year. I replaced it with a 700 Rem. Mtn rifle in same caliber. I loved that model 7 and miss hunting with it. I am now retired and am thinking of having it rebarreled into a smaller caliber. I have always like a 6mm Rem. but scarcity of brass keeps me from pulling the trigger on that. The new 6mm Creedmoor is an alternative that seems like a viable candidate even besting the 243 Win. I have a very capable gunsmith who shoots some competition as well as very good at his profession. I am a deer hunter, varmint hunter who has guns for both but my love of guns is only eclipsed by my wife's love of shoes. I am asking for your opinion on which 6mm and why or is my fondness of a 7/08 overrules despite having one already.

Being retired may open a few opportunities due to the time you might have available now. Components may be needed, but you could have the time to wait for them now. There is a list of 6mm possible. .243 Win., .240 Weatherby, 6mm ARC, 6mm Rem, 6mm PRC for some of th ecurrent and popular 6mm. If you want to go off the beaten path there is also 6mm BR, 6mm Dasher, 6mm Rem or Win Ackley Improved, .243 WSSM, etc., etc.

And...

I admit to not knowing what bolt face each requires.

MT, great First World problem!

For the 6mm want, I'd go with a 243 Win or the Improved version. Why? Great brass availability, good for deer and for varmints with light bullets. Unless you want a new/greatest/most popular 6mm now out there, that old standby would be my first choice.

I had a 7mm-08 Improved build with a titanium action, a M700 clone for my high country mule deer rifle. It about duplicates my old and proven M70 270Win and does it in a short action with much less weight. So to keep your love affair going with the 7-08, you may want to consider one in the Improved format for all the advantages it gives....longer brass life, flatter trajectory, and better terminal performance. Just a suggestion.

I love my model 7 in 6 Creedmoor, easily one of my favorite hunting guns now.

Mine came from gt accuracy with a Wilson barrel. It's 1/2 or better MOA with factory berger 108 hunting rounds.

Not addressing your question directly but offering some experience with re-barreling Model 7's.

I had two three Model 7's re-barreled, two with Douglas Match barrels and one with a Hart. The Douglas barrels were one contour heavier than the factory barrel and the Hart was two contours. All three were 20" in length, calibers were: 2 each 223 Rem's and one was a 243 Win.

These were designed for my stalking "walking around" varmint and predator rifles. I replaced the factory stocks with B&C Medalists stocks. All three were outstanding shooters, in the 1/2 moa range with tailored reloads and easy to move about in the field.

I believe a 243 Win would be ideal for a dual-purpose caliber, i.e., deer / varmints & predators. Loaded with the 85 grain Sierra BTHP, you could use the same load for all these critters.

If this rifle is going to be shot with shorter hunting bullets, 260 Remington, if it is going to be shot with longer VLD bullets and it truly pains me to say it 6.5 Creedmoor. But if you have dies bullets and brass why not 7/08 again?

I wouldn’t let brass availability stop me on considering the 6mm Remington. It’s out there, you just have to be patient. I’ve got two rifles in this caliber and have not had any issue finding brass. However, the Model 7 pairs great with the 7mm-08 and the 260 Remington. As much as I like the 6mm Remington, I’d probably go with the 260 REM as my choice.

I'd choose a 8 twist 6 Creedmoor . Good brass, good speed, and unlike a 243, and especially a 6mm Rem... You'd still have enough room to load long, and feed heavy bullets from the mag box.
The most logical 6mm choice. You have to stuff the bullet way back in the case for a 6mm Rem. to feed from the magazine and then it's no better than a .243. The Creedmoor case was developed because the .260 case was too long for a short magazine when loaded with the newer longer bullets. The .243 case is the same length and has the same problem with longer bullets. Plus the Creedmoor case has a better shoulder angle. It will also feed with the same magazine/follower as the 7-08. If you are never going to use the longer bullets however and might be using factory ammo, the .243 would fit the bill and it's easy to find.

The 6mm Rem and 243 Win are barrel burners. I have a 6BR over 4000 shots on the Kreiger barrel, still shoots under 1/2".

If you want to go with a 6br then you will have feeding probs unless you get a badger mag adapter to fix the problem. Not expensive. I had a 7 in 6br with a match bbl and shot a 5 1/4in. 5x at 1000 with it. Amazingly. You will not shoot out the bbl, fun and no recoil to speak of so you will shoot more. If I did it again I would go with a twist to shoot the 60's to 85 grainers. 85 Sierra bthp for deer = proven. Smaller for varmints.

Use Lapua brass and you will get nearly unlimited firings and a jug of Varget will last you a lifetime.

I converted mine to 6xc but kinda wish I had stayed with the br.
