Remington- Buy complete rifle or action then build?

Seeing the steady decline of Remington quality control over the years I have to say that my "next one" will be a custom something. If you could still get the kind of 700 action that was found on late 70's early 80's stuff I would say to go that route. Even back then, the barrels were a 50/50 chance, but the action was pretty decent. Now, you can just go ahead and make a property line marker out of the barrel right off the bat. I wouldn't even bother to try and pawn that junk off on someone else. Even the triggers...40 years ago you could pretty much swap out a spring and adjust the trigger right on down to 1 1/2-2 pounds....I cannot understand how they can include the word "precision" today with a trigger that adjusts from 14 all the way down to 9 pounds!!!!

For a match rifle, I would definitely look at one of the many fine customs available -- Barnard, BAT, Pierce, Kelbly, Borden, Shilen among others (no harm intended if I didn't name your favorite). For a Varmint rifle, I would seriously consider getting a Howa barreled action (with nice 2-stage trigger), then putting a Criterion pre-fit on it when the barrel was shot out. For Varmint shooting I'd probably do a 22 BRA for P-dogs (6mmBR necked to .22 with 40deg shoulder), and a 20-221 Fireball for ground squirrels (that's sort of a Vartarg, but without the proprietary chamber). I really like the ballistics of the 22 BRA (sort of an easier version of the 22 Dasher). The Howa actions are smooth and the HACT triggers are very good for a varmint rig.

The Howa looks very interesting,I had never really considered a barreled action from them ...you have me thinking now .Having a workable trigger out of the box is a big plus . Thanks for the heads up.

Learn to read the wind, reload and shoot before you dump money into a custom or semi custom rifle! Any other advice not in this order is nonsense and should be ignored!

How smooth the action feels means nothing when talking about accuracy or accuracy potential! If anyone talks stiffness of the action especialy based on length they are a moron and yo need to run away from them. If any of that was true all the winners would be using Rolling Blocks, Single Shot Break Actions, Cannon style breeches and the like not bolt actions.

Dump a ton of money into reloading and get to range and shot a few times a week! When I was at my best in college I was going to the range 3-5 days a week. I was getting quality shooting in with rifle, shotgun and pistol each trip to the range.

Get a mentor in the sport you want do that is already at a very high level and model yourself on him!

If someone can not tell you specifically what makes a "custom" action better than a blue printed factory action with some guarantee and professional responsibility as in you get to sue them if they do not deliver on what they are selling or promising. Talk is cheap if it can not be measured and repeatedly reproduced. Tell me exactly what level of concentrically that action is being held to and what I get if the one you sell me is not with in specification!! Things like "It's Better" "They have tighter clearances" "They have less tolerance stacking". All of that might be true but it does not mean it is significant enough to be worth it or that it is better. It is like one hunter telling another hunter that his match grade barrel is better and more accurate than his friends because it was wait for it "air gauged"! For that matter what exactly equals "match grade"??? If precision matters than an industry has standards that are well defined and they hold themselves to best practices. When they do not do that as an industry they are just blowing smoke!

If you want magic take up esoteric things and religion if you want facts about what makes for an accurate rifle that engineering is all well known and fully understood. Have fun getting that info out of the ones with the knowledge this hobby is not that sort of hobby! LOL

P.S. Anyone here ever actually measure the "smoothness" of an action or the consistency and resolution of the human senses involved? I assure you these sorts of things have been measured not rifle specific I am sure. Were is the knowledge hiding? Where are the guru's and sages read to swoop in and provide this information free of charge?

Whatever you buy, make sure you can rebarrel it to a caliber with the same bolt head (223 or 308). Like others have said, those trued PT&G's when on sale, are a pretty good buy. I seem to remember seeing some on this site for a good price. Don't get all hung up on a Lefty. I shoot lefthanded and if you shots are from a rest (bipod or leaning on something), it if faster and just as stable to shoot a Righty.

I've been told to go custom action as to resale value. I'm sure this is very true if and when you decide to sell.
As for myself I have no intention of selling any of our firearms.
Therefore I will probably go with a trued Remington in stainless.
Points to ponder.
Did you say (our firearms)? Remember this, what she has is hers and what you have is hers too! There is no OUR!

Rem 700 action bush the bolt. Minimum freebore reamer for the bullet you want to shoot. A stock that is comfortable and fits the position you will shoot most often and the best barrel you can afford, the rifle will likely shoot better than you can until practice over takes experience.

Leaning more and more to just biting the bullet on the Tikka.

Ran some numbers, and if I went w/ a Bighorn action (which is the cheapest custom lefty action I'm aware of), by the time I buy everything else (all the additional components and some tools to assemble) the Tikka would be 600-700 cheaper for an identically equipped gun, which would give me plenty of room for a rebarrel in the INCREDIBLY unlikely scenario that I shoot out the first one (or more logically, cover most/all of the glass for it).

If I can offload the Magpul 700 Pro chassis I jumped the gun a little bit on earlier this week when I first got to thinking about this project (just listed in classified BTW if anyone is interested LOL) I'll probably just swing for the Tikka.

This post is dated Nov 16, 2018....Skeet man, did you get the Tikka?
