Rem mdl 7 custom build?

Even though components are limited I am thinking of a Rem model 7 custom build. Any negatives other than limited on components when compared to the model 700? But you can still get a Jewell and McMillan. Can you expect the same accuracy as a custom 700? Any advice on someone who has done this before?

I built .17FB and a .20 Practical featherweight sporters on 7 actions. Stock selection is VERY limited, most fit only up to a #2 contour. In my experience, they're ok for small caliber, lightweight truck guns using handloaded ammo. Long range accuracy similar to heavier barrels, probably not going to happen. Others may have had different experience but that's mine.

I've had two Rem Model 7's 223's rebarrelled with a 20" long, 12' twist, No. 2 Contour (one contour heavier than factor barrel) Douglas supreme barrels. I restocked one with a B&C aluminum bedding block stock the other had the orginal wooden factory stock. Both rifles shoot sub 1/2 moa with tailored reloads. The triggers were the old style Rem triggers and are excellent. The No. 2 contour only adds a little more weight but it's a much stiffer barrel.

I have a 243 Rem 7 in the shop now being rebarrelled with a 20" No. 2 contour Douglas barrel.

I love the easy handling of the Model 7 and it's mine go to walking around varmint and predator hunting rifle.

Yes the smaller size is nice to handle. Not sure if I would go with a 223 or standard boltface, not interested in the mag boltface. Many of the McMillan stocks can be inlet for the mdl 7.

Nice, Single shot or does it feed? What barrel contour and how is the accuracy?

Yes, single shot follower in the magazine. Krieger 8 twist rem varmint contour. Long Rifles trued the action and did a .272 no turn chamber. Shoots the Berger 105s at 2800 with 30.5 gr RL15. It is much more accurate than I can shoot off a bipod. He has no problems with clover leaf groups at 100 yds using a bipod. Its in an HS stock and I think it has taught him to make the first shot count pretty well.

Neighbor has a 6.5x47L with a 24" heavy sporter contour, B&C fiberglass stock. This rifle is a tack driver to say the least, and he did put a Gentry "quiet" muzzle break on it. He has killed a lot of deer with it.

My hunting gun is a rem 7 in 7mm-08AI factory RS rechambered it has a brown precion stock leupold 3.5-10 weighs 6.5# shoots 3/8in at 100yd! next I have a rem 7 in a 22br 25in Hart barrel a little bigger than a rem magnum contour a stock from legendary arms works similar to a micmilan hunter rifle basic trigger I should have it back next month!!!!!! you can build nice guns with a 7 but stock choice is limited good luck

I've built and owned several model 7's in 6PPC, 6BR, 7BR, 222, 221FB, 250 and most recently picked up a friends half done build in 6/284(why?), which I fitted with a Boyds stock. The number one detriment to the model 7 is being able to handle recoil as well as a 700 action. That little rear action screw leaves something to be desired for proper anchoring. With that said small calibers should do just as well in a 7 vs. a 700. The model 7's that I built in 6PPC, 6 and 7BR fed very well from the magazine, so this action is a good match for short fat cartridges. Stock selection is limited but most can be fitted to provide an accurate shooting platform for long range shooting. I pillar bedded all of them and all had bull barrels on them.

My 6.5 SAUM is on a Model 7 action, don't seem to be a problem...
Lots of XR-100 stocks to be had at a lot of places, and they work as planned...

Just drill it out and tap it for the 1/4-28 as the standard and move on. Yes, you'll have to modify trigger guards or bottom metal but you don't have to stick with the tiny action screw.

Only if you depend on 'drop-in' stocks.

McMillan inlets for the M7 (or M6, M660, or the XP series) but so does Tom Manners. There is a selection of bolts and bottom metal from PTG. Triggers can be gotten from the three (maybe 4) sources above.

There isn't any reason to limit the cartridge selection to the smaller ones, as noted you can run the RSAUMs and anything in the .308 Win. family or the Creedmoors. That's quite a few to chose from.

These actions can make terrific pack rifles for the higher elevations or difficult terrain when you have a gunsmith that understands how to build one. I use one each chambered for the 6.5 GAP 4-S and the .300 RSAUM.

Regards.

I had one built in 6.5 GAP 4S with a heavily fluted 24" barrel, it sits in a B&C medalist stock. it's just over 7 lbs fully loaded and a tack driver.

It's my favorite rifle for sure and I've killed plenty of coyote and a couple mule deer with it.

Making the screw in the rear bigger makes sense and doesn't seem like a big task. Now need to decide on caliber, I know where to get a blued mag donor action cheap but would rather have a SS standard boltface.

Have a 6x45 on a Rem/AAC action with PTG bottom metal with AR magazine. Sendero profile X caliber barrel and a laminated factory M7 stock that's free floated and bedded. Modified a 10 rounder with a single feed follower and then regular 10 shot mag. It gives me options:rolleyes: Not nimble or light but well balanced and shoots great. Don't mind the action screws, torque them and go.

I like it anyway.
