6mmBr Fun Rifle/Varminter Build Thoughts

I am thinking of putting together a rifle.

Not looking to build a benchrest rig, just an accurate rifle that i can shoot all day accuartely out to 600yards and whack a few whitetails with. mainly a headshooting doe gun.

Here is what i am thinking...

Rem 700
Krieger #6 Heavy Bull Sporter
Mcm Remington Hunter stock mag fill

any thoughts or advice?

thanks

Howdy !

IMHO.... skip having that Rem action "trued", and go with a Savage bolt gun/action.

I DK how much $$$ you want/need to put into this rifle; but Fred Moreo of Sharpshooter Supply in Delphos, OH does some great Savage tweaks/full custom work.

May want to look at Match Grade Mahcine-- he will do an action cleanup (trued and faceded) with a Shilen Barrel in SS and reblue all the other parts for $500 or so--put it in a nice stock and you are done.

You have a very good setup in mind, IMO...as long as the weight isn't a problem. What twist, and/or bullets do you plan on shooting?--Mike Ezell

i already have the smith etc lined up more concerned about the blueprint.

i plan on running an 8twist barrel that way i can shoot the new 105hybrids on down

would play with the 87g hornadys and 85g barnes too, as well as 105 a-max hard to pick just 1 bullet as there are so many great ones out there these days

I'd first look at what I wanted for an overall weight. These parts, combined with a "normal sized" scope, are going to put you well past 10 pounds bare.

For comparison, my 700 22-250 Ackley with a 23" #3, in a regular fill Classic, with a 3.5-10x40 in Talleys, goes 8 pounds, 6 ounces bare.

The Hunter stock is bigger overall, with a cheek piece, so add magnum fill, and you have a pretty substantial stock. I don't see a need for the extra fill.

Depending on what you are wanting you may want to reconsider but I think you are on the right track...

I did the same thing a few years ago... I had a Remington VS barreled action I sent to Pac-Nor. They trued action & installed a Remington Varmint contour in 6BR 10-twist. I bedded back inside a HS stock. I really liked it for what it was & it wa just about right for a do-all gun other than being a bit heavy for a very far hike with it. I did realize the use of an 8-twist when I started to shoot longer range & g hog matches.

When I burned that barrel out I went with an 8-twist Kreiger in same RV contour & upgraded to a McMillian A3 stock. I like the stock configuration MUCH better. It is standard fill & balances perfect with the 26" barrel & NF scope. I use it from paper-crows-coyotes-deer-tactical shoots. It is again too heavy to carry very far. It weighs 12.5# but shoots really good.

I think your on the right track but I would really think over your stock again. THe #6 weighs same as RV so you are looking at a decent weight. You have two choices. You can either go bigger stock & do a Rem varmint or A series that will be heavier; but will be a better platform for serious shooting. Or you can lighten the barrel & go with a hunting stock in a blueprint that's easier to carry. Either way, I would suggest doing the mike bryant mag conversion. Even having one in the belly (fast access) can really help a truck gun or fast follow-up hunting gun. Mine feeds fine!

Here are a couple pics of the same action in two builds. I like the later MUCH better although I added around 2 pounds.
