Rem 700 rivet extractor help

I removed the old one not knowing it was riveted in so after a few weeks I finally have all of the parts I need. I have the rivet and extractor but can anyone give me advise on the best way to remove the old rivet and install the new one.
thank you.

Brownells sells an anvil to backup the new rivet. Drill out the old rivet carefully so you dont enlarge the hole. Insert the extractor and rivet. Place on the anvil. Using a small ball peen hammer upset the rivet. Make sure it is flush to the bolt body.

I had to replace one some time ago on one of my pd rifles. I can usually figure stuff out, but this little job was challenging.

Getting the extractor in place without bending it to a useless state wasn't easy, and then I had to make an anvil to back up the rivet so it can be peened from the outside. Once it was all in place and peened, you will be lucky if you don't have to "adjust" it so it will work. Make sure the rivet head on the inside isn't getting in the way of the cartridge head.

I did succeed and it was working, but I swore I would never do it again.

I sent the bolt to carlsbad on this forum and can't be happier.

Good luck.

Jim
