Rechamber .260 Remington to 6.5 Creedmoor?

I got a really good deal on a lightly used (almost unused) rifle with a blueprinted Remington 700 action that I just couldn't pass up - mostly because of the chassis and scope that came with it. The rifle was chambered in .260 Remington, but I'm already set up for 6.5 Creedmoor with another rifle so I removed the barrel and used the action, chassis, and scope in another project rifle. I didn't want to invest in dies and brass for the .260 when the 6.5 CM is so close in performance.

I have a Remington 40X .308 that's going to need a new barrel soon and I'd like to have another 6.5 CM rifle. Is it feasible to have the .260 barrel - it's a Shilen - rechambered to 6.5 CM? Or would I be better off trying to sell the barrel as is and put the money toward a new barrel?
 
Unless you are a riflesmith or have a really good friend that is one, it will cost you about $300-325 to rechamber it. Additionally, the .260 is a bit longer which means you will have to cut some of the threads and rethread it! My position would be to sell the barrel and get a Krieger and have a good 'smith chamber it up for you..
 
What he said ^^^^^^. If you put money into rechambering the barrel you’ll still have a used barrel with X number rounds down it.

Save yourself the grief and aggravation, get a new barrel.
 
I would get a set of dies and use it.
260 is a great cartridge and you may like it more.
Forester make good dies for a good price.
just get a full length sizer a micrometer seater and your good to go. Then you could have them hone it for you at a latter time or get it done up rightaway for propper bullet hold with less brass working.

I like a lot of the 6.5mm class rounds. The Creed and 260rem are so close in performance that there is not much in it.

I think the 260AI and the 6.5x55 Swede (improved or standard) offer a bit more performance. I just don't go with all the hype but respect personal choice. Not bashing the Creed, I'd like to add one to the stable too, but the 260AI is one sweet round. If you aren't into fireforming cases then factory offerings like the Creed make sense. My comment was in jest.

Hmmm....hadn't thought about going the .260AI route, that's an interesting thought.

Might try selling the barrel first and if that doesn't work out, then consider rechambering it to .260AI. I have a .223AI and a 30-30AI (in Contenders) already, so I'm not scared of the fireforming process. Seems like the .260AI might give enough of a performance boost to make it interesting and worthwhile.
 
Where the 6.5 Creed outperforms the 260 Rem is when they are used in a short action. The two cases have nearly identical case capacities but with the 6.5 Creed case being a little shorter and fatter, it allows you to stretch the bullet out further which frees up a bit more case capacity and you can still run it as a repeater. It's a pretty small advantage, but an advantage nonetheless.

Having both, I completely agree. The 260 never seems to get it's best performance at top velocity, so the creedmoor ends up shooting faster anyways even though the 260 has more capacity.
 
When you sell it please remember that the barrel came from a blueprinted 700 receiver, so the barrel threads will be oversized and it's unlikely to screw onto another receiver.

If I was in your shoes I would keep the barrel and use on the trued receiver once your 6.5 creed goes south.

You'd only need a 260rem sizing die because there is a way to use the 6.5creed seating die to sit bullets on the 260 case. You just might have to back the seating die out a bit. But it will work just fine with out any concentricity issues.
 
Does the Creedmoor have s tapered case?
 
According to this diagram about .007” from the .200” line to the shoulder.
