.260 Rem vs. 6.5-284 project

I want to build a magazine fed 6.5. Any feedback on which direction I should go would be helpful. 260 Rem or the 6.5-284. This would be more of a hunting rifle with a 26" barrel on a Remington 700 action. I would like to shoot ballistic tip hunting bullets and or maybe some 130-140gr VLD's. Would i have feeding problems with a 260 ackley improved?

You can't feed a 6.5x.284 on a short action. .260 AI might have trouble in a double stack magazine.

Go long action and then switch to a 6.5x55 and you'll be happy as a clam :)

shane, I have a rem-600 chambered for 6.5X284. it was origonaly in 308 or 243. the magazine works un modified but only hold 2 rounds. for a hunting rifle i don't see why a 260 or 260 ackley wouldn't perform just fine as would a 6.5X55 but it won't fit in a short action. just my thoughts.______treeman

6.5x284 feeds fine out of a long action mag. The 260 is also a great hunting round. If you want the best of both worlds go with the 6.5x55 great round!!

I would go with either the 260 or 260AI.The case is a bit shorter allowing you to seat the bullets out a wee bit more.As far as using the 140VLDs in a mag fed SA. it's going to eat up a lot of powder space, you will be better off using the 120-130gr weights to maximizes your case capacity. You would gain some additional AOL if you went to a WYLDE magazine conversion it would get you to approx. 2.98 for a COL. VS a 2.87 standard Rem SA length it will add 300$ to the price tho. good luck ... BTW the 6.5 Creedmoore or 6x47 Lapua or a 6.5x250 AI would work well also

You know, one of the overlooked chamberings is 6.5 X 57,more common in Europe than the states) but everyone if more familiar with the 7 X 57 Mauser parent case litke the 8 X 57 Mauser, 6mm Remington and 257 Roberts.

While a short action may be just a touch short for the X 57 case, I do not hold to the commonly held belief that a well built short action is significantly more accurate than an equally well built standard langth action, if at all.

And that little extra powder capacity means you can use a little bit slower powder and maybe hit the same velocity as a .260 or .260 AI with less pressure.

I concur Rust,

its a .308 bolt face, nice long neck and RWS makes the brass. The biggest thing with the 6.5x57 is its basically the same capacity as a swede and Lapau doesn't make the brass.

I think a 6.5x57 or 6.5x55 and you elminate the body taper and put a 36 degree shoulder would be fun :)

While I would agree that a 6.5x57,6.5x55 or a 6.5x284 would all perform better than the 260 or 260 AI.,not in a SA mag fed rifle)The length of their cases means that the bullet would be set back in the case using up the powder capacity negating the effects of the larger case in a SA Rem. All above carts. would excel in a long action tho.

I think I would build a 6.5x47L it fits nicely in a short action and with the high BC of the Berger 130gr VLD at 2950fps its hard to beat

My hunting buddy got one of the first Remington 700 SS short action 260's that came out. It had a 24 inch barrel and was supper accurate once we dove off into the unknown of loading for it and found what it liked. We made the cases from Remington 243 Win. cases because you could not get ammo or cases at that time. We used starting loads for the 6.5X55 Swede for a starting place to work up loads because there was no load data out yet. We ended up with about all the H-4350 you could cram into a case. We mainly used Sierra 120's and 140's. We controlled the population of deer on a big farm in East NC by taking 100 deer a year. We took around 50 deer with this rifle from almost point blank to around 500 yards and the most any deer ever went after being hit in the front shoulder area was 3 jumps with over 90% dropped in their tracks. The 260 Rem will function great through a short action Rem. 700 and for hunting deer you don't need any more rifle. A friend of my buddy offered him almost twice what he paid for that rifle and he sold it to him. The guy uses it to this day and loves the Hornady 129 gr SST's. I have a sporter model 96 6.5X55 Swede Mauser I use some and with 120 gr Nosler ballistic tips right at 3000 fps it is a tack driver and a deer thumper. The 260 Rem. and the 6.5X55 Swede will be easier on a barrel than the 6.5-284 .
