I've seen some say that the recessed crown was for protection to some degree.
I thought that was all it was for.

A friend has an Anschutz 1408 running game rifle that's done that way. The counterbore is quite deep. Maybe 4-6 inches? I think he told me the length of the rifled portion of the barrel is only about 16-18 inches.
It shoots well enough, but no better than a regular barrel.
I resemble that remark, too. Lol!A lot of smallbore guys would do that (using what they called it a bloop tube) to get increased sight radius. Not sure if there was some other additional purpose (I dabbled in position shooting but was never really any good. And now it would take me too long to get up from any position other than standing.)
Yes it was for the longer sight radius. Within the rules.A lot of smallbore guys would do that (using what they called it a bloop tube) to get increased sight radius. They're Great for sending, the Blast FORWARD ( for Sound Mitigation ! ) I have, a Witt machine, SME "Can" on my braked, .223 semi-auto and it, works,. great !Now they make screw on blast cans for the same purpose Franklin espoused, direct blast away from shooter to make sound less to shooter.
Opposite of how a brake directs blast toward your neighbor.
I too have one on a hunting AR. Still should wear ear pro, but I never do when hunting (except duck hunting when I'm shooting a lot more than one shot for a deer). They're Great for sending, the Blast FORWARD ( for Sound Mitigation ! ) I have, a Witt machine, SME "Can" on my braked, .223 semi-auto and it, works,. great !
Mr. Franklin was,.. ahead of his Time !
