The new BVSS is a nine twist, not sure about older models.
Bought a cheap Howa last year and after struggling to achieve decent groups I scoped the chamber and discovered an eccentric bore-chamber relationship. Sent rifle in for warranty service and Howa sent a new unit after admitting the chamber has "issues". Received new Howa and it also has chamber eccentricity "issues". I've never seen this type of thing with the several Savages I've owned. I will never purchase another Howa.
Easily determined by looking at lands as they fade in the leade. If some lands extend beyond others in a sine pattern then the bore-chamber relationship is not true.Just out of my curiosity, how fo you find the eccentricity issue?

True but there are still some around. As I said I know a gentleman who has a NIB 223 that he would be willing to part with. Mine is the most accurate mass produced factory rifle I've ever had the pleasure to shoot.
The XR-100 probably won't be any harder to find than the Howa in 223. There are a few on Gunbroker at the moment: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/771755828
His price is high for a used rifle but they do have a reputation for accuracy.
I have a Howa, that started life as a 308, its now a 6.5x47 lapua, I just had my gun smith rebarrel it. He is a very high end custom gun builder. And in his words he was way impressed with the Howa action and Stock that is pillar bedded. He put on a 26"35 brux 4R barrel with a muzzle break. I have not got to shoot the Brux barrel yet can't wait. It lived one year with a Pac Nor 6.5x47 barrel and was very impressive. So can wait to see what this does. Hard to Beat a Howa.I’ve been doing a lot of searching on the net and forums for a new rifle. The main purpose will be for ground squirrels and prairie dogs at distances beyond what my 17 HMR and 22 Mag cannot reach. I haven’t seen recent reviews, (2017 or 2018) of the two rifles side by side. I have decided on the .223 Remington since I have dies and lots of cases already.
This is what I’m looking at:
1. .223 cal. 1-12 twist
2. Ground squirrels & prairie dogs.
3. Scope will be either a Vortex PST FFP 6-24x50 or Sightron 10-50x60. I have both scopes now.
4. Will be shooting 40 to 50 grain bullets.
5. Howa 1500 Varminter Supreme HWR95112 or Savage 12 BVSS
6. Will add replacement trigger for either rifle. Not a fan at all of the accu trigger.
Both rifles get good reviews on the accuracy. Some favor the Howa action over the Savage. I’ve never owned either one, but was able to handle a Savage in the store the other day. While it was not a 223 or the model I wanted, the action did not feel smooth at all and it didn’t lock up smoothly either. I know with the Savage, I can change barrels if so inclined, but I’m not interested in changing calibers.
Any input would be appreciated.

1-8 Twist is preferred in a 223 caliberCan you get a 223 with a 12" twist? Don't get me wrong, I prefer a 12" twist since I like to shoot 50 and 55 grain bullets but it seems all the manufacturer's are producing 8" and 9" twists in the 223 Rem these days.
+1 for the Tikka's - great rifles - accurate - smooth bolt - good triggers - but they have an 8" twist.
The subject of this thread is...Skip both and get a Tikka. Swap out the factory trigger spring for an aftermarket “varmint” replacement ($6). You’ll be happy that you went Finn.

Ready for new rifle. 223 - Savage vs Howa
They are available for just about everything now. Specifically Remington and Tikka.Just to make the choice harder, for those that are saying to choose the savage over the howa because you can easily change barrels. Mcgowen and CBI both make "howage" barrels with barrel nuts.

All the time, but I like to stay on topic when I see a specific question asked.Ever think out of the box?
