Next Gun Suggestions

Thanks again to all for the very informative reply's.. really appreciate it and value all the input... It is true I don't need another rifle.. but needs and wants, well you know the story. As it stands right now a 22BR is the rifle I'm hoping to put together.. Savage Target action with Shilen Stainless Match Grade / Bull. Maybe the 20 VT that got so much praise will be next...

I've been having the same thoughts and recently came across an old Remington 600. I decided to rebuild it in 221 Fire Ball since I already load that for an XP-100. I hope it makes a nice little walking gun.

PS: Zell Miller the former Governor of Georgia opened his NRA speech several years ago by saying "I have more guns than I need but not as many as I want".

I might suggest a different shooting platform alltogether. Try an A/R built in .204 Ruger or .20 Practical. Shooting those 39 grainers super fast and not having to break your cheekweld or hold while following the critter and shooting as he runs adds a whole new level of fun to varmint shooting. I too have the PPC's and BR's, along with a host of .223 and .243 varmint rifles. The A/R in .20 caliber is the funnest I have tried. While not quite as accurate as the bolt guns (it shoots 1/3 M.O.A.), it does get more kills because of the rapid follow-up shot to the "weather report".

So, as mentioned. I'm going with the 22 BR.. Shilen.. asked me when ordering a barrel. .248" or .244".. I think the. 248" is no turn right? Thank you, mark

.248 - .224(bullet)=.024/2=.012

.012 neck wall thickness= turn neck, most new Lapua brass is in the .013 range.

You need to get your brass and dies, load a dummy round and measure it.

I go .002 over the loaded round for the reamer BUT i also turn necks to make them uniform.

You may want to go .003 bigger.

If your brass necks measures .013 then...... .013 + .013 + .224 =.250 + .003 = .253 would be a no turn.

You REALLY need to have your brass to insure that you will not have to turn, unless your a sadist like me and don`t mind turning...... ;D

Looks like the 6BR would already cover everything. The PD doesn't have a clue what the name of the cartridge was that hit him.

Anyone shooting pd's should have at least one 204 and or a 20 vt. I would be curious though as to what the kill ratio with a 20 vt would be at 900 yds. The 20 vt is one of my favorite cartridges as it uses little powder, doesn't heat up very fast, has virtually no recoil and has good barrel life. Long live the vartarg.

For high volume sage rats i agree you need something that only shoots around 20gr. or less powder because of the barrel heating up. Thats where most of your 20 and 17 cal. Shine. Just my 2 cents.

You guys got me thinking. So far only been using only .223 but also thinking about another caliber. Basically, my main requirements are number one, accuracy and a close second, seeing impact. If number two isn't there, what's the point!!!

If you had a 6MM BR varmint gun and didn't like it then not sure what would do a better job of tripping your trigger. I just had one built on a Rem 700 action. It weighs 14 1/2 lbs and shoots better than anything I have ever shot PD's with including my .223 and 22-250. You could go to some over bore screamers but they just burn up a lot of powder and throats, make more noise, and don't kill those P-dogs any deader than the 6 BR does with a wide variety of bullets. Let us know what you decide on or better yet, just keep your 6BR and send me the new gun money:)
