Re-calibrating Leupold VH Reticle

I can't say I'm impressed w/ this scope,6.5-20x40) but I own it so might as well use the thing. My intent is to take it PD shooting and hopefully the VH reticle will aid in fast shots at various distances.

The rifle is a wildcat, will be zeroed at 300 yards and I wish to leave the scope on maximum magnification, so factory calibrations are out the window. Is there any way of calculating the MOA value of each stadia line with a 300 yard zero? I understand the ballistics of my cartridge and would like to be able to know what distances the stadia lines will intersect the bullet path. I called the Leupold tech line - that kid didn't even understand the question, let alone the answer. Any insight would be very much appreciated!

Tomboy , go and shoot that fine scope and make your own observations and record them, then you will know ............." for sure " . You can get exact readings for what the stadia mean as regards your setup .

I've always had good results in my conversations with the custom shop , sorry you did not . One thing you can do is to either call again and try to score a different person or just ask for someone else the first time if you are not communicating .

That second option calls for some tact and consideration for the person that you were talking to . As you said , he was a " kid " . Kids need to be nurtured so they can grow up and answer the questions of " adults " that dont knoew the answer .

I was only trying to be funny there , no slam intended, I too have been exasperated by a long line of "Phone people" that do not know what or why they are where they are .

Shooting in the field and recording the results is the single best method I know of for obtaining the information you want . It is also the most time and effort consuming ....................remember , you get what you pay for !!

You'll probably have to just go out and measure it yourself. I'd take several different measurements and just avg. the deviation from the cald. subtensions. Then recal them all once more using the avg. deviation. This way u will probably get a more accurate measurement.

...and when u get the subtensions please let us know what they are. I would like to know this info also in case anyone else asks this ?

As I recall, the Leupold catalog has the MOA separations of the stadia lines in it. I remember trying to figure out what cartridge it was made for - it doesn't match any known cartridge,Surprise surprise!!)

If you have access to a ballistic program, you can run the numbers of your bullet, and then work it out on paper. It won't be 100% accurate, but at least it will get pretty close. Then it will be simple to verify the numbers in the field, and tweak your notes.
