We have a couple of shooters who have rail-guns chambered in a Grinch with 1-8 twist barrels.
Both are short-range guys who have expanded their shooting to include long-range.
Sounds like they are shooting pretty good and have asked if they can shoot them at our 600 BR matches.
After discussing this with a few of the locals, they said they would also be interested in participating in this contest if we decide to do it.

I have only discussed this with a very small group however they have all said, "it's a game of extreme accuracy isn't it.... why not".

I think we could learn a bit and have some fun. I do not see any down sides to this.

Your thoughts?

I think there should be individual classes after all it is not the same as a Shooter shooting off bipod or bag or even possibly a rest you could have one class that was unlimited where anybody could do whatever they please but there should also be specific classes for people who feel this would be an unfair advantage to the rest of the Shooter’s

Not at Outlaw Benchrest we shoot for Fun and encourage everyone to search for anything to enhance accuracy. We are not interested in excessive classes or rules that seem to always take away from the FUN!!
Our motto: If you want to win shoot Better!!

Are you really shooting better using a gun like that or is it more like a machine shooting for you if you don’t hold it in your hand you are not shooting it that is my opinion

While the conductor plays no music he is still in charge of the quality of music you hear. I dont know any form of BR that holds the rifle in their hands. That is All.
Y'all come and have some Fun now ya hear!!

I didn’t meant mean shooting off hand you know what I meant it’s OK just bringing the difference of actually hands on the rifle versus a machine I don’t compete or anything just giving my opinion

You should try it! Find a BR match near you and call the director. I'd be surprised if they couldn't find someone with an extra gun to bring out for you to give it a go. Trust me - it's not just putting the crosshairs in the center and pulling the trigger - even rail guns need a competent driver to control them correctly! I think it's pretty analogous to shooting offhand vs prone with a bipod - different skills are important to do it well and different size groups are possible but the driver is still very much involved.

I did try it was a marksman match event at my range where I am a member Strategic Edge in Chapel Hill Tennessee and I won my first match out I think I just got lucky It was fun I must admit I was so nervous going to the range everybody is shooting during a match everybody is watching you again I was very very nervous I also competed in 1000 yard match but finished near the end of the pack did not do so well in that one William Cauley D4359ECE-7859-4EB2-BD36-231BAF667627.jpeg

It is your first instinct when seeing a rail gun to think it takes all the shooter out.
Nothing could be further from the truth some of the biggest groups I've shot at 200 were with my rail

You’re right that was my first thought I guess I owe the rail Guns a little more research I can definitely see there is still all the load development sighting in etc. but you are correct I thought once you had it set up it basically is like a shooting machine with very little input from as you say the driver but I am slightly embarrassed and intrigued and will research them further thank you

They are capable of shooting so small any little error on your part shows up big!
Push it back a little to hard bang the rest it's all over
Miss the wind let up and you have two tiny little groups on the same target talk about embarrassing

When we (Western Colorado) get a few folks with rails together this fall, we will be running an Unlimited Class at our 600 yard IBS matches for the rails..... and whatever. One more chance to shoot. I know one very good F-Class shooter who is very happy we are doing this, He wants to kick the rails arse with his .284!
There is a good chance he will!

According to this website, my 300 WSM will have the recoil energy of a 7 lb 204 Ruger or 10% less than a 7 lb .223.
The calculation for my 6 Dasher is 20% less than a 7 lb 22 hornet.

Both should be plenty manageable.

That is truly a beautiful rig. Theoretically if you could create a base for it to rest on that was filled with sand, some how separating the front and rear, it would be legal for 1000yd HG competition. Currently everyone has a separate front rest and rear rest. Support the whole rig on two separate sand filled platforms and your golden. By the written guidelines, all you need is 1/2” of separation between the “gun” and the rest. I would argue that the complete rail assembly is the gun.Ha.
