QuickLoad request: 260 Rem

260 Rem, 1:8 barrel
Lapua brass
43.2gr H4350
140gr A-Max @ 2.91" COAL

Looking for velocity estimates for 20" and 22" barrel lengths.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

BoilerUP, with that load and using QL's default settings, from a 20" barrel you should get around 2674 fps and from a 22" Barrel you should get approx. 2735 fps.. You might want to consider RL-17 as you can gain a few fps with slightly less pressure and same approx. barrel time. Hope this helps.

Wow...91FPS from 2" of barrel? :o

Would you mind running that same load for a 26" barrel?

My 260 is currently 26" and I plan on either cutting it back or replacing it with a shorter barrel so it handles better while treestand hunting. The estimated velocity will help steer that decision.

I greatly appreciate your help - thank you!

BoilerUP, I make it 61 FPS for 2 inches of barrel, Rel 17 is the powder to use with a short barrel.

Looks like he edited it, 30fps/inch seems more reasonable.

I've had good luck with RL17 in my 26" barrel with 130gr VLDs...3000fps+ with no pressure signs and very good accuracy. My observations have been about 100fps more velocity with RL17 than with the same charge of H4350...unfortunately, I didn't find accuracy as good using the 140gr A-Max as I have with H4350. I've also seen +/-50fps velocity swings depending on temperature.

Basically, my goal is the shortest barrel I can achieve 2700fps with using H4350 and the 140gr A-Max without loading too hot. Looks like 21" might be my huckleberry...

BU, Running your numbers with a 21" barrel should give you approx. 2706 fps. because QL is a guesstimation and can only give you approximates, I would start with a 24" barrel and chronograph actual velocities, barrel can always be shortened further but once it's gone, it's gone. Are you shooting this for target or hunting? QL predicts 2837 for 43.2 Gr's of H-4350 from a 26" barrel. Sorry about the edit, I didn't read your first post close enough and the first figuresa were derived using a 140Gr. Berger, the edit was for the A-Max.

I really appreciate the data, thank you!!!

My rifle is currently a dedicated range toy so a 26" barrel is fine, but my brother decided to take up hunting and laid claim to my other rifle so I'm moving toward a dual-purpose rifle setup and 26" is too darn long and heavy for carrying through the woods or use in a treestand.

Given the longest range I have available to shoot is 650yd, I don't think I'm going to miss 5-6" worth of velocity and will gain a lot in maneuverability.

Sounds like you have a plan, I personally have a 6.5X47 Lapua, with 24"' Kreiger on a trued Rem. 700 Action with Kiff bolt. I shoot the 130 Berger Hunting VLD's and they are outstanding. You may want to give them a try, you could definitely gain some velocity while loosing very little if any in energy and momentum. Good luck with your project and keep em all in the ten ring........................Chuckhunter
