Quality 30-30 brass

Looking for quality 30-30 brass for a wildcat project. Consistency is of course a priority. Brass strength is also important since I'll be pushing pressures on the high side. I've never been impressed with Remington brass and generally preferred Winchester. However I have no experience with Starline or other manufacturers. Any suggestions?

I have 400 plus 3030 brass let me know if your interested

I have a couple 3030 and a collection of brass that I have tried out.

I don't push my loads as that is not the point when I take the 3030.

My $0.02.

Winchester: hard stiff brass
Remington: Medium, consistent
Federal: Flexible not soft, consistent. This is my choice.

These are all range pickup.

We load for a 30-30 Contender pistol that was used primarily for IHMSA Metallic Silhoutte, both 10" and 14" barrels, and have had very good luck with Federal brass. The bulk of the loads were full power and would actually be slight overloads, .2 to .4 grains, for a model 94 Winchester. Primary powders used were 3031 for the 10" barrel and Win 748 for the 14" barrel.

I run a few wildcats most are the 30 aardvark . I cut the cases in half then determine which are suitable by a few hot loads . Current winchester brass is my choice now , that may change next season .
As a side note I use to use 225 win brass when available or even 375 win . Both are rare now , but they did have considerable thicker webs .
These are in bolt guns only !

Hmmmm...interesting. My first choice is RP. I have several 30-30 lever actions, several 30-30 Contender barrels, plus 7US and 6.5US in BF, 30 and 357 Herrett Contenders, 7-30 Waters Contender barrel and lever action, and a 30-30 bolt action. RP seems to work best for me.

Winchester is hard, and I find, more often then not, the Winchester has different rim thickness. Remington seems to always fit inside the rim recess.

I have some Federal brass, but have not found enough of it keep more than a couple of boxes loaded for anything (box = 100 rounds).

If you headspace off of the shoulder you create, you can push 30-30 pressures on the high end safely with minimal brass wear.

Steve :)

Have used a few Hornady pieces I picked up. Compared to my Remington brass, the Hornady seems well made, tight pockets and a bit more consistent in the necks.

Often play with different rifles to shoot 300-600yds. for bit of a joke that has lately turned pretty interesting.

Like the others, always had good success with Federal brass in a few 30-30 based wildcats. I used to shoot a lot at a public range and usually picked up enough 1x Fed brass during sight-in season to keep everything fed.

Tommie go the Benchrest Central and read the thread "why I shoot the 30/30 in benchrest". Check out the hand made action!!

Federal did a run of 30 American brass around the mid 80's if I remember correctly. Basically 30/30 brass with a small primer pocket.

I nearly bought a batch of that brass a few months ago. But I'm not sold on the small primer theory. Seeley Masker tested his version of the 6mm Wasp using standard 30-30 brass and 30 American brass. He couldn't detect any difference in accuracy.

I have shot both of the 30-30 benchrest rifles and its absolutely unbelievable what they will do with a 125tnt, 125 ballistic tip, or 125 sierra! The day i shot them the wind was howling and they still shot in the 1's and LOW 2's with those "cheap" bullets.....

In most cases the small primer gets better accuracy. The one thing is you can usually run more pressure without ruining the brass. The small primer gives more support to the primer pocket because brass is thicker. Matt

Excellent reading. Thanks for sharing.
BTW I'm not choosing a 30-30 based cartridge from ignorance. There are some definite advantages (as well as some disadvantages) with 30-30 brass versus the "me too" chamberings. But when it's all said and done, my main interest is in re-establishing the experimentation mentality that used to flourish in the accuracy world. I'd rather try a theory and possibly fail rather than buy a clone gun.

If you have no desire to invent get a 6PPC or a 308 Winchester. All the problems you will run into have already been seen and solved. But making something work that nobody else can or wants to has rewards that most will never understand. Willicd76, Mr Turner gave you a super compliment, you must really shoot well! He must be an exceptional machinist.

To follow the herd is easy , to lead the way is hard but very rewarding . My hat is off to you , I've got more than a few 30-30 rifles . All are heavy barrel single shot bolt . Love the challenge , actually it's not really a challenge , it's a very easy case to find an accurate load for and I love the look on other shooters face .
It always stuns me when I call it a 30-30 , shooters show little interest , when I call it the aardvark , they ask all kinds of questions . Go figure .
Keep shooting
