Public Gun Range Amazement

Well we have replaced the horizontal hanger boards and uprights a few times now at our range. Know why they are shooting the tops and bottoms? Because people are so ignorant they hang targets on and over the cross boards and right on the dang upright poles. This time we have left them for months now and there has been no backers available for hanging targets. I thought that might prove a point but I am probably only fooling myself.

Man I sure hope your club’s berms are containing all those errant rounds. It’s little spoken of that every member of a club is liable for any consequences of rounds leaving the club property.

Downhill, you pretty new at this, eh?

If your shooting benches are covered, look at the roof over the benches!

We had people walk down range to look at their targets during a hot range with people firing.
Yep, our cover is riddled with holes. Mostly pistol caliber but some rifle. I Don't want to question anyone's right to bear arms but there are some real idiots who should just stick with golf.

I once had a ceiling tile Explode over my head, in a lgs.
It was an Employee, across the store, clearing his own pistol, to show a customer!
Half of us in the store dropped down and grabbed our own, while the employee Yelled ACCIDENT, ACCIDENT !
It Could have ended Much worse.

The Windsor Rod and Gun club in Windsor Illinois, the old clubhouse had been shot multiple times, the skeet houses, the neighbor's machine shed(I have no idea how as there was a huge berm and a forest), the propane tank for crying out loud had been shot!!!!

That be Rivoli? The only range I ever shot a match where you’d better be real watchful bringing your gear to the line....

And be mindful of WHY somebody shouting CEASE FIRE is making all the fuss.

Those beeves wandering about between you & those targets are mighty pricey were you to drop one.

Great range though, really tricky 1,000 yds. Great folks too.

See all kinds of horror issues at the two clubs I belong to but I'll focus on the target stand issue since that's the OP's issue of choice.

1. Seen some guys come to the 100 yard range (we have a 25-50-75-100-200 fixed target stands) and try to sight in a new rifle w/ a new scope at 100 yards sometimes hitting the posts holding the backers. The posts are 3 feet apart in width. Why they don't use the 25 or 50 yard stand for initial sight it or bore sight first is beyond my comprehension.

2. Rambo's with the A/R opening up with 20 to 30 rounds of sustained fire shredding the target backers and posts that hold the backers. Wonder what that kind of sustained fire does to the barrel? I would think that if self defensive is your game then you might opt for the 25 yard target stand and fire in controlled bursts but what do I know, I'm just a precision target shooter and hunter.

3. Guy's intentionally shooting at the 4 x 4 wood posts which hold the target backers. Just guessing here but when you have clusters of shots at the posts that almost almost cut the post in half that sure looks intentional to me but I can't prove it.

I build our frames out of 2x2 steel square tubing. We cover them with the 3/4" rubber floor mats for livestock trailers ( works great as the rubber is semi self healing). Now not looking at the horizontals, it does honestly piss me off when I look at intentional groups in the vertical supports. When we do range maintainence it is always the same 8 to 10 guys who show up to put the work in. I am actively pushing the club to raise annual dues and to increase the day rate in hopes of weeding out the morons.

I worked in law enforcement many years ago and another guy had the hammer on his revolver in the cocked position when in the locker room, when he asked how do you release it someone said pull the trigger. There was a loud bang shortly after. True story. The walls and ceiling of the indoor range were very shot up, and this was a govt range only used by us.

i belong to 2 local ranges. one of them opens for a period of time for "sight in days" for the local deer hunters. when i was cro i had my workers watch as people unloaded their gear from the cars. if not cased, you were stopped, point muzzle at ground, open action, about 1 in 20 had a live round in chamber. i will not comment on the level of accurracy. the rso's needed to ride herd on the line as many have no concept of firearm safety. example; i had a shooter decide to shoot a steel at 200. hit it, then holding the rifle, turned 180, sweeping line, then said to buddy did you see that?

The range I go to isn't really private. You're required to pass a safety exam before being issued a range card which you use to sign in, but it's not supervised. Most of the back-stops are for the most part, usable. Some shot-up pretty good, but you can still find a spot to hang your target.
The 25yd pistol range was shut down due to someone firing over the berm with a .223...hit a house down range. The berm was about 15', now 30' to cover. I try to spend most of my time at the 300 meter, few AR guys ever show up there.....mag dumping there would be extremely hazardous...hard to tell where the shots would go.
I've seen guys go through drills at the 25 with AR's...shooting from the hip, rolling around on the ground. Just a sick feeling watching the dirt fly, not safe.
Btw, not trying to pick on AR guys. I have a Valkyrie I'm trying to develop loads for. The difference, to me anyway, is I'm going for accuracy, not shot count downrange.

tl:dr
but i was at the foothills shooting complex last weekend (i go about every other weekend, or so) and there were 2 tacticool frat bro's at the end talking about how cool their tactical rifles were and how they wanted to buy nightforce scopes for their junk ar's....

so there is steel above and below the targets to keep errant shots safe and richochet's in check.....

one bro says to the other that he "snuck" onto the range without a qualified rifle (you have to qualify at 50yds) and just shot the steel to determine where his rifle was hitting...and kept dialing and hitting steel till he found paper.

he was BRAGGING about this...

our youth is screwed....they're all mostly idiots
