I did my 4 hour stint at our locals range's "sight in days" in Nov before deer season. Helped a number of people, some who understood what they were doing, some kind of OK and others who had no business touching a rifle, let alone going out in the woods with one. One older man brought 2 rifles, several boxes of various ammo. He did know which ammo went with which rifle, but it kind of stopped there. I spent a lot of time with the guy because he was really nice fellow and I truly wanted to get him squared away. Ultimately, we put one of the guns away because it had too many problems and the other we finally got "on-the-paper", close enough to kill a deer.
But here is what got me, every time this guy loaded his rifle, he put the safety on, then said "safety on", then pulled the trigger to make sure it was really on. I watched him do that twice and finally said "HEY, STOP THAT!", and went on to explain if the safety wasn't really on, he would fire the rifle. He kind of looked at me and "oh ya, it would".
Like I said, he was a really nice guy and he went out of his way to thanks me when he left. But WOW they walk among us.
