Primer prices - having a laugh?

I snagged some match SRP Federal's this morning at local store for $90 a brick. Plesant surprise when I saw 16 boxes on the shelf along with a bunch of pistol primers.

Farmers are pretty good at getting through hard times by making do with what you have to work with but I've never made a primer. I would like to observe your process from a safe distance.... John
There was a time early in the beginning of my "re-loading" process of primers where watching from a "safe distance" would have been wise...for both of us. I've made so many that I feel quite safe re-making my homemade primers now. You might be able to find my process on YT. Just search for homemade primers.
Most on YT did not show actual functionality, just proof of concept. I put it to the test and it worked...mostly.
I've gone from a 96.5% success rate down to barely 50% back up to the 95% and back down! Seems there's a limit to how many times the primer cups/anvils can be re-used.
One good source was a site called "Aardvark Re-loading". I never actually was able to gather all the equipment/chemicals he used but I think the site has really good info that I incorporated into my gig.
Check out www.22reloader.com too. I use their powder kit to make my priming compound.

Well, this is the worst primer drought in my 58 years of hand loading. I did not think I would have to tap into my two 50 year old bricks of these. I fired 50 shots of them yesterday in a 7mm-08 practice load with no failures. I have no plans of using the CCI's.......yet. I think I was just out of diapers when these were made.

Went back to the same store where I got some FED. Match SRP the other day. Today they had regular SRP, (not match) for $69 per brick. They had 10 "bricks" on the shelf and...23 cases on a dolly! Many match pistol and SRP also on the shelves. All Federal.

Let's do the math: I purchase 1k 205M for $120. That's 0.12 cents a round. So if I could get them for $60 that's 0.06 cents a round. If I shot 5k rounds for the year that's a whopping total of $300 increase or savings depending on your point of view... I just spent $80 filling up my gas tank today... I don't lose any sleep on prices of primers or powder - now can I find what I want... that I do ponder:rolleyes:

There are people that will double that, its what helped keep the prices up.

Maybe trade 5000 of this for 5000 of that to someone. I have started shooting much more SR these days and have a surplus of LR.

Some places are pricing cases including shipping and hazmat fees....
Im sure people are lined up to pay $555.00 for a box of primers.

Edit: its 590.00 for 1 box of 5000. Per box price is around 118.00 inc tax ship insurance etc.

I have purchased 2 cases of primers and have been buying cases of 5.56 ammo for tactical club matches from them for a few years. Not sure why you would make that statement!

Good question, When I looked at the ad it had a CCI 1000 primer box for 549.00 + shipping insurance + tax = $590.45.

After looking at the ad again its a 1,000 count box in the photo but the text says 5,000/box.
Still 118.00 per 1,000 cnt. to the door but not as bad as it initially looked.

Also they take visa and not Pay Pal only or other like cash untraceable payments. Meaning the are legitimate,

I still don't think people are lined up to pay 118.00 a box but at least they will get them. I will change my previous post on that part. Thanks!

All I can say is keep checking the local shops. Ours have been cheaper than the on-line places $75-$89 for most brands and types ( FED GMMs 205's for $89-$99)

Last year I got 1,000 cnt boxes of CCI 41s for 59.00 in a Sportsmans Wherehouse. They are still cheap but they never have them in stock since. If I go online they are over $100.00 + Haz fee + ship + tax or like 130.00+. In store you avoid the Haz fees which can be quite high some places. Trouble is no stores have had any primers in stock in my area for years. If they do its buy 100primers (Not 1,000) limit two.

The 41s have been about $85-$89 and most around here will let you buy a full case 5000

I just got home from the LGS east of Denver. Bought a few bronze cleaning brushes. They have a very limited selection of loading stuff. There was a single stack of ten 100ct. packs of CCI 34's priced at $16.10 each. He had two bricks worth (20 100ct. packs) of CCI 450. Price on each 100 pack was $42.60.

I asked if this was for real. The guy says yes, but at least I have them.

I bought six brass core 8mm brushes @$1.65 each. At least that was fair.

Why are some people whining about the price of primers and powder when compared to buying gasoline every week primers and powder are just a drop in the bucket. I feel sorry for the poor bastard's in Cali paying upwards of $8.35 a gallon for gas and people are whining about the cost of reloading components? Please let's get real. Most people don't shoot enough to where paying 120 per brick is going to break you if so u better find another hobby like sewing.
