Primer Deactivation

Now, I'm thinking cleaning your gun might have been easier and if I may ask; a case of what?

I have a 25-06. I guess someone went to the range with it, dropped it, and failed to notice. I came along picked it up and found the potentially live primer when I removed it.

Well, John O., I think I found the only possible answer:

Put it back in the case with the 25-06, take it back to the range, drop it, fail to notice, leave that range and never go back.

Not thinking, Brian.

He wants the 25/06 case. Being smart would be to put it into an old case, one with an enlarged primer pocket maybe or a split neck & ditch that one as you suggest.

I reckon you might be right. I was thinking what he meant by "25-06" was a rifle in a gun case, that he picked up.

That is a good reminder to be careful.

I wouldn't think a guy that runs a thread 4 pages on how to get rid of 1 (one) primer would need a reminder to be careful.

John O. said:
Or, prime an empty case, insert into correct firearm, press muzzle of firearm into a wad of rags then pull trigger. No muffs needed.

Then I would have to clean my gun. I don't think it would be worth it for just one primer. Besides I found it by taking it out of a case that I picked up.

Now, I'm thinking cleaning your gun might have been easier and if I may ask; a case of what?

JohnKielly,

If you are in fact correct, then; John O.'s mention of having a 25-06, in John O.'s reply to "a case of what? ", had no bearing in the matter. It just dawned on me that John O was speaking/writing in Femaleish! ;)

John O,

I apologize for being sexist and making an assumption based on your name, ma'am. ;)

I have one unknown primer that I want to deactivate so I can dispose of it. Will charcoal lighter fluid do the job? Or will I have to use something else? Thank you.

Good point JohnKielly, this was her original post and then, after numerous suggestions, some of which were good; she said she tried the lighter fluid anyway on reply #53, which fits perfectly with my Femaleism theory. ;)

Not only would that be a waste of brass but(remorseful tone) IT IS THE ONLY RANGE THAT IS WITHIN A REASONABLE DRIVING DISTANCE.

Rifle brass.

I hope that the remarks that are theorizing at my gender are only jokes. If so you are hitting below the belt. If you are serious I challenge you to answer how the name "John" could be female.

Perhaps I am being overly cautious in regards to this primer. However, as I see it if you are lax in one area when it comes to reloading. You run a greater risk of having a gun blow up in your face, or having a cartridge go click instead of bang. True the second will not hurt you, but it still isn't a desired outcome. Especially if you settle the cross hairs on a (insert your dream game animal here).

John O.,

I the spirit of this thread, I thought the whole thing was a joke and I have never hit a girl and don't intend to.

Well..........except for once when I was trying to back a boat trailer with a tongue brake, in deep sand, between cedar trees, at night and I threw up my spotlight to look out the back glass and blacked her eye but it was purely an accident.

O K guys, easy on the cyber bullying. Some of these young folks can't take it, (not saying John O is one, but not saying he isn't either) too thin skinned, not like us old guys that have been around the block a time or two. Kinda like the shooter out in Oregon saying he felt the Whole World was against him. ::)

Hmmmm.... :o You guys are worried about hurting feelings, but I now have to go buy a new gas grill. That 10 year old Char-Broil took a beating from blast effect essentially knocking loose all the rust holding the burners together. She is limping now not to mention heavily contaminated with lead styphnate. I think Home Depot still has them for sale.

Back to primer activity or not. Someone had been told to use acetone to deactivate primer, did so and tossed in a fire. I think the acetone would render the compound insensitive to concussion while wet, but as soon as the heat evaporated the acetone the primer was again an active compound= bang. Infact almost any liquid that penetrates the primer would deactivate it against concussion/percussion. There is some form of barely stable oxidizer in a primer and when heated past a threshold this oxidized will decompose- unless of course the deactivation resulted in a non reversible chemical reaction with the oxidizer. From past experience as a teenager, I can tell you primers in a fire are never a good idea. Unless you want some destructive activity.

bobm,

If the Home Depot doesn't have the primer resistant grill that you are looking for in stock and has to order it; while you are waiting for it to come in, why don't you try some carefully controlled testing in the blender and garbage disposal and let us know the results? ;)

/VH, no chance of that happening. My dear wife says I broke the grill, I pay for a new one.
We spent any extra monthly funds at the Dynamite Shoot this past weekend. I have to tap my shooting fund allowance on a new grill. :'( That ain't right. :o I saw a $99.00 one at Home Depot that will do for now.......... :)

"Buy once, cry once". Go for the Weber. On sale now, too, in Stainless. I guarantee it's primer proof!😄

The stupid primer still isn't deactivated yet? When will it be? I haven't been able to leave my basement in over a week, fearful of what might happen.
