Primer Deactivation

(Air horn honking the all clear) (P.A. system crackling and says) The line is clear---The line is clear. You may now exit the bunker. Test is completed---The test is completed.

The results are as follows. I saw that I would be unable to secure sufficent time without on-lookers to cook it off. Therefore I decided to test out my replacement RCBS universal primer arm by seating the primer in a piece of brass, plugging the brass with water closet tissue, and pulling the trigger. The primer had sufficent force to not only detonate, but to drive the tissue plug out of the barrel.

The conclusion is that the RCBS universal primer arm is effective. As well as the observation that charcoal lighter fluid is inefective at making a primer innert. Furthermore the outcome of the test has rendered it innert.

Yes I wil end up cleaning the firearm.

Any questions?

Are you 100% certain of that?

It seems possible that a primer that has been seated, decapped, soaked in charcoal lighter fluid, re-seated and then fired by a typical firing pin strike in a brass cartridge that was plugged with toilet paper instead of being subjected to the typical pressures associated with the firing of a cartridge containing powder and a bullet or shot, might contain some residual unburned priming compound remaining in the corners of the cup.

I just found 30 in a Wolf box. I carefully put them in some cases put powder and a bullet in them. Going to the range and try to deactivate them. Will tell you the results. Larry

my dad would say, your as smart as a show dog.

Unless you mean that as a complement that would be a terrible thing to say. They go round and round for what? The only thing a dog gets for a show is at best a chance to breed later on. If that. And I for one ain't going to freely procerate with anyone unless there is a circle of gold on the ring finger of my wife.

You are free to microscopically analyse it. To tell the truth I was thinking of selling it, since it is so popular. Even if it did contain a trace ammount of un-reacted compound I hardly think it would do anything if it were to encounter enough heat or pressure. Unless it happened in an optomal air to fuel environment. Oh great, the land fill or sewer might fit the bill.

I may have an option that will finnaly render the little devil totally innert. In the making of the buggers water is used to not only make it maluable, but to make verry docile. I can put it in an old plastic soda bottle filled with water for a week. Then change the water once or twice to insure a safe disposal.

No not the beverage container :o. There may be traces of carbonation left in it which combined with said primer may be fatal ..... ::)

How about an 8" engineers vice. In its current condition, I believe that you could safely squish it into submission & perhaps form it into desirable keepsake.

I got a big kick out of the cases I put 56 GR of Bullseye powder in my Dasher. Larry
