Primer Deactivation

What for? Now you can get back to true grilling by investing in a charcoal grill. Anything less is a waste of good meat. ;D

Joe R, a soup kitchen??? :) At 62 and retired yeah, I do have plenty of too much time. Plenty of time to spend at the range, hand loading and lots of other fun stuff. Right now messing with the damn internet but packing my truck camper getting ready to head to the Dynamite Shoot in Gateway, Co. later today. I have been hand loading steady since age 12, taught by my Dad and Uncle. So, not a newbie by a half century.

My post is the truth, primer went bang. I may experiment with other ways of decommissioning a live primer next week. Afterall, I got too much time. ;)

This thread has been really fun. Thanks John O. for starting it. 8)

You're welcome it is odd to see how this simple question has been "blown" out of porpotions.

John O,

I'm so glad to see you're back to posting again! For a while this morning I was worried that something tragic might have happened with that primer.

I was trying to hunt down a job. Stupid thing keeps slipping over the ridge just as I line up on it.

Well I've done a little of that job hunting. Here's a couple tips you might can use :

1. If you're trying to get on with the government, you should attach a copy of this thread you've got going about the disposal of 1 (one) primer to your resume. That should get you locked in to more offers than you can imagine.
2. If you're trying to get on with an outfit that actually has to produce something tangible, on schedule and within budget; make sure they don't find out about this thread, just tell um you'll go to any length to solve even the simplest issue.

Here's my method if I get concerned enough to "de-activate a live primer" #1 method, flush it down the toilet.. #2 method. Seat it into a piece of brass, and place brass in appropriate rifle. Place muzzle against the crappy carpet I have on the floor in my loading room and pull the trigger..

I hope that you don't live in an appartment.

my wife vacuums them up with the spent ones. according to my count I only lose 1-2 a year. the cost is killing me, not to mention some poor soul stepping on it at the land fill and losing a leg.

A few years ago I accidently vacuumed up a few live primers with my shop vac. All the static electricity in the hose lights them off nicely :o

The suspense is growing unbearable. Please let us know when you have disarmed this device.

Heck, I want to see a picture of it, preferably in it's potentially live condition! It's got to be the most famous primer ever.

When I was a child and the family needed to dispose of old/questionable ammunition, we brought it to the Police for disposal.

I'm guessing the bomb disposal folks would have little issue about including old primers, etc. when disposing of other explosive Hazmats.

Check your local police website for any instructions on how to handle such issues. I would think that they would take a dim view of civilians disposing of explosive devices.

7 pages concerning 1 live primer ::)... It will be real interesting when cabin fever sets in.

No disrespect intended, just an observation.

That only affects the northern states.

No cursing please. Besides since I have attempted to use lighter fluid and considdering how much interest has been shown in it. I need to see if I was successful and then report my findings here.

Well, here it is. The 100th post on how to kill a primer. Or how not to. I put four (4) CCI 200's into a cheap aluminum sauce pan the other day. I covered them each with Palmolive dish washing liquid then added even more in the pan. I then added a quart of boiling hot water to the mix, stirring while adding water. I put pan outside with a cover on it for 48 hours. FOURTY EIGHT HOURS soaking in soapy water. The water again turned yellow from the paper disc I guess. I then removed three of them to dry naturally in the sun on a window sill for a full day.

I did pry out the anvil on a wet one for a look. The compound was mushy but stuck to a tooth pick OK. I hit the mush with a Bic lighter and it snap, crackled and popped like a 4th of July sparkler wet and all.

Just now, all three of the now fully dried samples went bang per my gas grill method as if taken directly from the trays. Go figure. They would have fired a loaded cartridge.

Water or even soapy water does not kill primers.
